Help, knocking/rattling sound on Defender 90

My 1988 Defender 90 has started making a knocking/rattling sound (sort of a loud tick tick tick) when making hard turns (sounds like it is coming from the front right hand side), this is before it gets to full lock, and when on full lock the pump belt wines.

I have replaced the pump and pump belt and however tight I make it, it still wines. I think this must be a steering box problem, as all else seems ok, I have checked oil levels, greased all that can be, replace track rod end ball joint etc. etc.

I have a steering box seal kit, but before I attempt to fit it I would be grateful of any advice if this is what may be causing the rattling, do you think the seal kit will help, and any advice on how to fit the kit.

Cheers in advance.

first thought is a knackered CV joint.

Steering pump always will whine in full lock but should not tick.

I would also doubt the steering box would make a tick tick noise as all is stationary in there once the wheel is "pointing the right way".

That sounds like a CV joint is past it's best from your description.

Without hearing it its difficult to be certain, but the pump should make a whining noise on full lock, a sort of buzz/screech is the best description I can come up with!

Gerenaly speaking, the steering boxes only work or not, with or without leaks (unless the someone has wound up the adjustment so much that the poor thing can't turn freely) - I can't see that there is anything in there that can screech or tick.

FWIW, I've always thought it was bad practice to hold the steering against the lock stops. The pump stops whining or whines much less if you back off the wheel a fraction.

This is generally a *bad thing to do* don't hold 'em on full lock for longer than absolutely necessary.

OK, CV joint seem to be general consensus, thanks very much, now to show my real ignorance, I have no problem in identifying CV joints on lesser vehicles, but where is it on my baby (that's the 90)??

ohhh i see, now that makes sense.

just been and had another look at it, with another fellow landy owner, and it looks as though it may actually be the steering pump, it keeps locking up (excessive squealing) and the rattle could be coming from their also (or problem is in opposite wheel to what I thought)?? so now i have another possibility (wouldn't be so bad but i only replaced the pump about 6 months ago).... perhaps i should stop driver in mud and deep water....... but then again........ eeee I love owning a Landy :-)

Steering pumps are not consumables. If its gone again did you bleed the air from it correctly the last time it was replaced? Have you any ATF fluid in it?

Try jacking one wheel up off the ground at once with wheel in full lock, engine turned off and turn the wheel about the axle (not steering lock). You may need to do this at both sides to identify which joint is duff. A "fubarred" CV joint will sound itself, if its the steering box or pump it will not.

i had a cv joint go on me some years ago , it does make the noise you mention, if i were you id fill the swivel housing with oil or fluid grease pretty darned shaprish before the joint goes bang on a tight turn .

the other thing it might be is the tyre tread rubbing the chassis or a mudflap , this usually happens with larger diameter tyres, ie 7.50x16 mud tread or 31.5to 33x15 .

if it is a couple of knocks from under the floor on tight turns it might be the bolts loose in brackets for radius arm bushes , on the front axle , brackets on drivers side .

check wheel bearing play as well .

i have tonight checked both swivel housings, and both at correct level, its one shot grease. the drivers side radius has very slight play in it, and may require new bushes, (will be ordering them) as far as i can see the previous owner seems to have replaced all bushes down the passenger side, but not the drivers side, it wouldn't be the first that i have had to replace in the last 10 months. i have checked all other fixings and they seem OK.

the large wheel point is a good one, i have BF goodridge 7.5 x 16 on

27inch wheels.

i also jacked up the front and checked wheels, seems to be no play, and only sound when turning them was from disks rubbing pads.

this is getting annoying now, and i think i am getting more paranoid.

My husband and I hear a knocking sound also but we've been told by two different shops that we need to replace the small block. One mechanic said that it looks like it was driven without oil and the engine locked up. Then the dealership or someone else forceable unlocked it and sold it (to us). We already put $3k into repairs and car rental expenses and it's still going to take another $3k to replace the small block with a used one. Yuck!! My husband doesn't want to get rid of it though. I don't blame him. It's a solid vehicle.
