Help! Rear Diff Oil Leak Questions

Hi,

My 110 is dumping oil (in Alarming quantities) from the rear diff where the shaft from the transfer box enters it.

Is this an easy job that can be done with the diff in place and the drive shaft removed ?

How hard a job is it?

TIA

Easy. Remove the drive shaft flange, pry out the seal, fit the new seal (in theory you need a special tool to fit it square, but it can be done without this if you are careful), reassemble. Only catch is to check the surface of the drive flange where the seal runs is not worn, if it is the seal will not last long. A workshop manual would be a good idea so you can see what is involved. Eight times out of ten it is the axle breather that is blocked. Remove and clean, check and repair/replace and you will probably find your leak magically goes away. Unless you have had some string or such wind itself into the seal and destroying it. Replacing a seal is one of the easiest jobs. Almost easier than unblocking a bunged up breather.
