I can't decide????

Really can't decide what Landie to buy next, I need aircon, reasonable comfort and decent mpg and have a budget of around £10k. It will be 90% road and 10% off road use.

Options are

  1. D1 300 Tdi - Cheap as chips but getting a bit long in the tooth and they rust
  2. D2 TD5 - Plenty around and prices low but guzzle diesel and can be costly to repair
  3. 110 TD5 - Expensive but the most desirable, mpg could be an issue
  4. Freelander TD4 Auto - Cheap, comfy, good mpg but a bit limited off-road.

The heart says a 110 but due to cost the head is saying a well specced Freelander HSE. With AT tyres, under-body protection and an auto box it is pretty capable in the rough.

I really really don't know :-(

VFM is the TD5 Disco 2, just get a manual.

Also, it has easily the best seating layout for you.

The main thing is the wheel hub sensors on the front, easily replaced, but not cheap. Factor it in.

It is a good motor, auto is thirsty so manual better but heavy to drive

Much better bet than a 110 matey & nearly as good off road. Also *miles* cheaper.

I'm very happy with me D2 TD5. Apart from the hubs/wheel bearings the only other trouble i've had has been a leaking air bag on rear suspension (£80 for a bag) and 45 mins to change.

Howsabout

  1. 110 V8 with autobox and LPG??? or
  2. DII V8 with LPG???

On another note, someone mentioned DII wheel bearings.... spent 4 hours last Sunday attempting to change one - the shaft just would not move out of the hub splines, with the full might of a 15-ton hydraulic press! Done 2 previously with no probs but this one beat me. First time I've EVER been beaten by a landrover part, and not happy about it! Why the f*** are the damn things loctited in on the splines in the first place, when the hub nut is as tight as it is...... Tried solvents, heat, cold, impact etc etc but it just would not budge! Now, had it been a weekday I could have resorted to the main dealer and replaced the blooming shaft/cv joint as well as a last resort, but I ended up bolting it all back together, not happy. Badger.

I've had similar issues with a non-LR hub. Even my 60 ton press wouldn't move it without significant amounts of heat.

I seem to remember mine was a bit tight to get off, but it came off ok. Did you get it off in the end or not??.

Nope, had to reassemble it. First time defeated, not happy! I think it's gone to the local main dealer, methinks they'll claim the u/j is dodgy and replace the whole lot when they find out just how tight it is! Badger.

Or - maybe a decent 3.9 v8 Disco with LPG? (Yes, the aircon is actually better than our D2)

Good motor once we beat it into compliance, it's advertised on

I got the impression from my RAVE that the hub sensors where integral to the hub... duff sensor = new hub... B-(

No, they are seperate, it's the splined bit thats integral to the hub.
