Indicator problem

Hi all,

Coming back in the rain tonight my indicators on our 93 Defender packed up.

The hazards work ok, but when you indicate left or right all you get is a buzz from the relay!!.

I took of the fuse box cover and it seems water had somehow got in down there!!.

It looks like the flasher relay is behind the panel and is either the red or black one.

The Red one certainly switches when the hazards are going but I think the black one could be doing the buzzing.

Its too dark to do any more checking now, but does anyone have any ideas? I suspect may be an earth, but not sure if it would be near the switch or near the panel.

Strangely, I just went out to have a look and the first time I indicated left or right they worked... then back to the buzzing of the relay.

The relays also seem pretty inaccessible.

Hope someone can help

Regards

Certainly sounds like water ingress. As a quick fix before getting a new relay I'd run an extension cable outside and aim a hairdrier, on warm blow, to the general area of the relay to dry it out. This may take some time. I've used a spring clamp in the past to hold the hairdrier so I could get back inside .. ;)

Thanks Paul,

Just gone outside again.

Its drying up now , but the relay is buzzing away (contacts arcing??) but the lamps themselves are all off.

IF I do have to get the relay changed how do you get it out? It lis mounted at the rear of the metal panel with a stud thjrough !!!.

Thanks

Looking in the Haynes it looks like the main earth for the flashers goes direct to the relay. Does anyone know where exactly this is terminated?

Thanks

Hello Zen. I had a simular problem with my indicators. Unless the 93 wiring harness is different from my 84 model. The green/purple should lead to the flasher unit relay. If so try taking that relay out, if it feels wet or damp spray some WD40 in it then shake the relay. Hopefully it works. ;->

Its raining heavily.. RED HERRING

Hazzords all OK RED HERRING..

After managing to get the flasher relay out, it is bone dry.. the water is too the right of this and now dried.

Used WD40 anyway..

Reassembled fuse panel...

Still same problem.......

Removed fuses for flashers ... Relay still buzzes???????????????????????????

At least it is not raining..

Pushed in all fuses a couple seemed a bit high..

Indicators now all work!!!!!!!!!.

Why I do not know but I will not loose sleep over it.

Thanks for all help

Heheh .. on my S3 the indicator relay was pushed back through the bulkhead and resided just beside the speedo cable entry ... it wasn't screwed into anything so was simply a matter of disconnecting the wires, taking it to Halfords and getting something close .. ;)

I'd guess mine wasn't standard anyway as IIRC the replacement was from a Citroen .. and worked fine ... ;)
