Klonk when accelerating ?

Hello

I bought a secondhand Disco 200 Tdi 1992, very happy with her exept a small klonk (noise) when accelerating. (better , when I let my clutch come to rapidly)

What could this be??

Thanks

Dan

It could be a few things, but with a Disco of that age there's a good chance it's the splined input shaft on the gearbox losing its splines. Early boxes had an oiling problem which was solved on later ones with a drilled input shaft. If it's very noticeable going from forward to reverse, it could well be the problem.

If it's this, you could fit a recon box, or if the box is in reasonable condition apart from this, I think you can replace the input shaft with a drilled one, which will stop it getting any worse.

Apart from this, worn bushes could cause a similar clonk.

Well we had exactly this problem with our 1993 200tdi - ran it for some 8,000 miles like that until relented and got a recon box :-)

Nope, they carried the design fault forward when they designed the R380.

It will be free play somewhere in the transmission. Mostly of little concern, except it could be wear on the gearbox main shaft splines - a problem with some gearboxes. (does not apply to automatic) Things to check - Chock the wheels and jack up one wheel at a time to check where the slack is. The thing to watch is a big increase in the free play between handbrake on and off with the gearbox in gear (to see if the problem is in the gearbox). If there is any play in any universal joint - replace it ASAP. Otherwise, no immediate action is essential. Another problem that shows up the same is free play in the linkage that locates the rear axle. Most likely is wear on the ball joint on top of the rear axle, but check for loose nuts on the front of the rear radius rods, and check all bushes, front and rear. JD

Hi Dan,

R380s as well, I believe, but it was originally screwed up in the LT77.

We have a similar noise on the Range Rover, as you change gear and it takes up the drive.

its the backlash on the crownwheel and pinion in the front diff . if you hold the front propshaft i bet you can turn it 1/4 of a turn back and forth .

mine does same , i will probably drop the diff at xmas and take out shims from the pinion shaft to tighten the backlash up .

gear, not shaft.

and you can also get a cunning gadget from Steve Parker to fit to the back of the T-box, and dribble oil into the offending parts.

left unchecked, eventually the splines will wear out altogther, losing all drive. Takes some time for that to happen mind...

other places to look for play include the propshaft UJs, axle splines espeially front (3 lots of splines each side on the front) and also at the front CV joints. If it's been run without proper attention to swivel lubrication it may have run dry on one or both sides, which doesn't do the CV joint much good, especially if it's got dud seals and water's got in.

note that you have not only the CWP backlash but also a total of 6 sets of splines, and 2 CV joints, all of which can be worn. changed 1 CV on mine recently as it'd started rattling on full lock, when examined, there was a lot of play in it.
