Land Rover size really does matter!

Last night I tried, without success, to get a quote online from Norwich Union's breakdown line, because it kept telling me my vehicle didn't exist in its database. I rang up tonight to be told that as it was a VAN they would have to put me on to their van line. This was explained by the guy on the van line, apparently a Defender 90 is a car, while a 110 is a van! It would be interesting to see what classification such vehicles as Landcruisers and Rolls Royces go into, as they are about the same length.

Half an hour later, I finally got my quote. The guardians of the EU will no doubt be relieved to hear that Norwich Union does recognise Iceland as being part of Europe, unlike the RAC. All I need to find out now is how I make a call to the breakdown company in Iceland, I can just imagine the conversation now.

"So which track are you on?"

"It's sort of gravelly with a river running across it."

"Can you see a volcano or a glacier, so that I can work out where you are and tell the patrol where to find you!"

"No, but there's a sort of water spout."

etc. etc.etc.......................

I haven't called David because it now looks unlikely that I shall be going, due mainly to the fact that Iceland Express prices seem to have had an attack of school holiday rip off disease. When I looked at their prices three days ago it worked out to about £350 for three of us to join the vehicle if it went out by container from Immingham, at a cost of £853 return. At about £1200 this represented a considerable saving on the Smyril line route via the Shetlands. Tonight the flights have miraculously risen to £717, so on Monday I'm going to ask my employers to pay me double salary for July and August, on the basis that everyone else seems to charge rip off prices for this period, so why shouldn't I?

Cheers, John.

When I tried to get insurance from Direct Line about 7 years ago, I was category told they didn't cover LWB Land Rovers irrespective of the number of seats. A local broker was much more willing to cover me, faced with 'saloon', 'hatchback' and 'estate' body type tickboxes on the form, he just crossed the lot out and scribbled 'Land-Rover'.

My normal insurance is with the NFU, who charge me about £160 for fully comp including business use for travelling around at work. When I bought the

110, the guy I had it from advised me not to tell them that it has ten seats, so I didn't, removed the stupid stool arrangement behind the gear stick and the rear seats.

I can now honestly say that I have a six seater 110, which slightly pissed off my eldest daughter, who thought that she had progressed from a taxi to a minibus when she left clubs with all of her mates in the early hours! The rear seats have been replaced with a removable rear floor, which gives me double storage space using boxes.

Iceland may have to wait for my 60th birthday trip, unless of course the ice has all gone completely by then due to global warming. I looked at Sweden last week, as I really fancy going up to the Arctic and there's plenty of places to use the canoe, if I ever manage to get the bloody thing on the roofrack, but there seemed to be a lot of small roads which would slow down progress in the limited time I've got and as Martyn says, it's expensive there as well. As I leave two days after Billing I suppose I really ought to make some concrete plans, but I never like to rush these things!

The Gibson desert looks nice, anyone know how much the airfreight is for a

110 and three passengers..............!

Cheers, John

PS If you see a 110 labelled Doom Trader with a canoe on the top at Billing, please come and say hallo, but if you see a canoe in one of the lakes with an upside down 110 on top, can you please come and winch me out as it means I've put one too many boxes on the roof rack!

My V5 says 2-axle Rigid Body Van. But then I don't have an insurance policy on it, so it's academic....
