Land Rover - strange tubes - DISCO

Hi all,

On the 29th of October I took my Land Rover Discovery in to have a new gearbox at Legs. I was very impressed with the speed and efficiency and except for having to get used to the new gearbox, no crunces and a little tight, I have been very pleased.

However, I have a question, upon hosing down the engine bay I noticed two flimsy black plastic tubes coming from the area of the gearbox, they protude half a metre from the gearbox into the engine bay compartment but are not connected to anything. Are they part of the fitting procedure or breather system? They were not there before I had the new gearbox. I am concerned as they are hollow tubes and was worried in case they should be attached to something????

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

No, they are gearbox breathers. The gearbox has some vent holes to allow for oil / gas expansion, and these are raised above normal wading height so the gearbox doesn't fill up with water when you wade. There should also be one on each axle - they all come up in different places. If you are doing serious wading, you can extend them up higher.

They should ideally be turned down at the top, so the aperture points downwards, this will help keep water out of them.

PS: If the tubes weren't hollow, they would probably not be very useful for much at all :)

If they were not hollow....they would be bars?!!! Hollowness is ISTR a requirement of a tube :)

And yes...they are gearbox breathers. Affix them to the firewall with a tiewrap :)

I think you are describing the breathers - they are usually "hooked" at the top and fixed to the back of the engine.

Before I set up in business I had a clutch changed, and the "specialist" , quite sensibly, chose to do it by taking the engine out. Years later I was messing about underneath the Defender and discovered their solution to re-routing the breathers - they had been cut above the bell housing!!!!
