Landrover Defender - Wheel nuts/studs

Dear All

Does any one know what size the studs are on the wheels of a a landrover (Defender 90)? I'm trying to buy some bolts that are the same size to mount a hi-lift jack when not in use. THe idea is to use the same size bolts as the studs so that I can use the same locking nuts as are on the wheels. This means I only need to carry one wrench etc.

What I'm looking for is something like "M12 x 1.50" where M12 is the diameter and 1.50 is the thread's pitch.

Any ideas?

make sure you hunt metric nuts for them... should be OK if you stick to

90/110/defender parts.

earlier models had UNF, I think, and I believe series I had BSF.

Never been UNF as far as I remember. Earlier (to Series IIA) were

9/16"-16 BSF. I think that all the BSF nuts may have been double-ended.

The nuts joining the two halves of the SDC split rims have been 1/2"-20 UNF. There may have been other variants.

I guess they might have gone straight from BSF to Metric. Although the IIA seems a tad early for the UK car industry to be putting metric stuff on :-)

It was - metric started on Series III.

It did, but not on the early Series 3, they still had the B.S.F with the small nuts. When the studs used to come out with the nuts on Series 2s and also take out the threads due to there being more threads in the double ended nuts when rusted on, I used to replace them with the press in studs from the early Series 3, also having to size the hole and countersink the hub flange to seat them properly. Still alright if you have an old Series I or II with this problem (576825 pt. no. for stud)

That's a single ended BSF nut you're describing?

I wish that I'd known about that thirty something years ago but, fortunately, my hub threads survived to live again.

double-ended.

Sure is, but you can still use the double ended ones on them. Some MOT stations used to have a moan saying the threads didn't come entirely through the nut but usually ok'd it when shown the length of the threads in the nuts intended for those studs.

Funnily enough I got asked for one of the old hubs with the threaded in studs only last week and I still had a new one in stock. More shelf space cleared. :-)
