Leaking clutch master cylinder

Whilst poking around the CD autochanger trying to work out why it aint working, i noted a damp patch on the mat beneath the clutch pedal. The master cylinder is leaking where the plunger goes in and out as it were. Can i get a seal kit or do i have to buy the whole thing. Oh and is it an easy job?. Looks it but you never can tell with a Land Rover!.

IME, seal kits for these type of things are a waste of time, unless replacement cylinder is impossible to get or very expensive.

YMMV, of course. You have to do as much work to change seals as to swap the unit, plus you have to do the seal-changing bit, and if you don't get it squeaky-clean inside, the new seal will fail prematurely. Hence, I normally replace the whole thing. Nothing to prevent you stripping the old one at your leisure and deciding if it's worth replacing the seals, then you have a spare.

Just to add to that, the main thing to look for is any scoring in the bore of the cylinder, which will necessitate replacing the lot.

But then you'll never need the spare with a bit of luck. :-)
