New truck in The driveway

Group,

Greenhorn here and I am looking for some advise. I just happened upon a 96 Disco Auto with 123K and could not resist. I own a shop and I have been servicing this guys fleet for years and it has been well kept. I just never looked at these cars though owners eyeglasses so my project has begun and I hope I dont go overboard as I tend to do so with my rigs. Off the bat, the condensor was sprung so it got new along with a compressor and drier. Threw in a hose while I was at it and a tensioner. Alternator started screaming shortly thereafter. Cant believe how well these HVAC units cool, Meat locker stuff. From what I can see after driving it for a week is, Rust in the Arches coming through along with under the Alpine windows. Paint is white and oxidized. Uses a bit of oil, and am going to try moving to a synthetic and some additives. Gas milage not great but I have been hard on her so far as she was babied in another life. Would love to bring this truck back to shape and have some reading to do and this group looks to be a good place to start. Any advise will be appreciated and my mechanical career will probably help me hash out the rest. Joe

I'd be very wary of what oil you run in a V8 LR - a good quality 20W/50 is about the only suitable oil.

especially if you're in a warm climate. I get away with thinner oil on the ones here in winter, but I do use good quality oil

The other issue I recall is sludging, for which you need an API SG or better oil, unless you have anti-sludge additive you can add.

That is from some vague memory of oil specs, so might be worth a check. Annoyingly, it's increasingly difficult to get really good 20W/50. I tend to reckon it's the 50 part that's the most important, so good 15W/50 is probably better than crappy 20W/50, at that.

most modern stuff is only 40 when hot, which is a bit thin for a V8 designed in about 1960.

I've been using either Pennzoil or Q8 20W/50 in V8s of late with good results, but the Q8 UK wibble doesn't list either of the variants available here. However 380083654661 looks like a passable option for Pennzoil aside from the price.

heh.

from what I've seen over here, Morris lubricants still do a passable 20W/50, but aside from that you're looking at silkolene or suchlike, and a price tag to match.

I'm currently using some quite high-spec 15W/40 texaco, which does fine in the TD5 but is really a bit thin for the V8s in summer, but has the advantage of being available in 25-litre drums, locally, and at a good price.

I don't know whether it'd be good enough, but I got a 25-litre container of Agritec ACEA Plus 15W/40 from an agricultural suppliers for around forty-five quid a few months ago. It's CG grade, IIRC.

The V8 is designed to run on 20W/50, but has sludging issues, hence wanting better quality oil, SG or higher IIRC.

There's any amount of 15W/40 or such around, 'cos all the modern stuff runs on that or thinner. The problem is getting decent 20W/50 without spending an arm and a leg.

I found SG rated Valvoline 20W/50 in my local supermarket for the equivalent of 8 quid for a 4l pack over the weekend. Maybe I should start exporting it to the UK.

Thanks Fellas.

Had wanted to get my hands on one of these since taking a trip to Rovers North in VT for a BF Goodrich training weekend and getting to see what they are all about. Guess I will have to buy an Autologic for the shop now as we do a few of these and want to supply the whole enchalata to our group of friends. Did the front and rear diffs, transfer case, tranny and oil. Got a price of $650 to do both the rockers/wheel arches and the Alpine window rust from my body guy so thats looking up. Trying to decide weather to sell this after i go through it or keep it in the mix for fun. What is a fair price on one of these? Thanks, Joe.

Probably not worth it. You can still get it here but just have to visit a proper motor factors or landy/classic specialist.

I think my last tin cost me about =A313 for 4.5L

Its =A32.40/L if you buy 25L drums direct from Morris over t'internet

oooh, that's handy. I didn't know they did that.

The SIII needs 20W50 as well, really.

aha. Ring Free also in 20W/50 and a high spec at that, and slightly cheaper :-)
