O/T - portable gas fridge?

Hi

I know its a bit OT, but I suspect many LR owners like me use their LRs for going camping and the like. I'm trying to find a small portable fridge running on gas (camping gaz or similar) rather than electricity - its all very well having a 12v fridge, but if you don't use the vehicle for a day or

2, then you end up with a flat battery!

Anyone know where I could get something like this and at what cost?

Thanks

Neil

Try your local free ads paper under camping and caravanning. Three way(Gas, electric and 12 volt) fridges usually go for about £80-£100. Whatever you do, check on the web for spares availability for the model your going to look at, as models change fairly frequently and you can't always get the burners. If you intend to do a long overland trip, go for a compressor fridge at about £500, as these can be repaired by a normal refrigeration specialist en route if they go wrong.

If you want to save money and just want to keep milk and butter cold at a fixed camp site, try the following. Put whatever you want to keep cold in an open bowl full of water and cover it with a soaking wet towel etc. This works by heat loss as the water evaporates and is a really effective way of keeping stuff cool without going to the cost of buying a fridge.

The other drawback of fridges is that they do take up a lot of room, even in a 110. I hope this helps. Cheers, John

Kin eck, they've got the fridge I've just sold for 100 quid in there at 195.95 - I only got mine a couple of years ago and it was nearer

270!

It's probably a very good buy at under 200 quid if you're happy running it off 240 or gas, but the 12v only 'maintains' the existing temperature. I believe Tim is going to use an inverter, which would be fine.

I'm going to seek out a decent inverter at Billing if possible, but in the meantime I plan to run it on gas. The back of the 101 is a bit 'thrown together' at the moment, so there was no time to get the wiring sorted out.

Did you see those monsters on the TrekOverland stall? I didn't manage to catch anyone's eye to ask the price, but I'll bet there's a comma in it!

Yup!

They don't actually fair any better than the Engel, in fact the current drain was slightly higher on the similar sized model. Bloody sexy lokking things though - if one can apply that type of statement to, erm, a fridge!

As I'm looking for a fridge at the moment I did and in fact brought a price list away - felt like I needed a sit down after looking at it though!
