Oil change in a 2003 Disco II (US spec V8 engine)

Howdy gents --

Bought a used Disco to replace my worn out Range Rover and didn't get an owners manual. To my disgust the oil level is about a quart low and looks awfully dirty, so I have some concerns that the previous maintenance was a bit "casual" and I want to change the oil this weekend.

How much oil is in this engine?

What viscosity is appropriate here in Florida where it's hot, hot, HOT?

What are the experiences with synthetic oils in these beasts?

I apologize if this is a sore subject -- in some of the motorcycle groups that I'm in we joke about the regularly scheduled oil threads where the zealots get involved. But don't worry ... I'm sure that I will be asking about tires next ;)

Seriously, thanks for the info!

Won't do you much good unless you learn how to spell it properly first.

It would seem that you need about a quart more than it currently contains, ie

946 mL or using real pints it'd be 1115 mL or there abouts. Sorry I don't know what the sump capacity of that engine is, whichever engine it might be. However, remember being a Land Rover it will have a tendency to make its oil dirty and also to dump large quantities of it on your driveway. This is normal for these vehicles, indeed, when one stops marking the driveway it can usually be reckoned to be out of oil.

6.1 Liters or 12.9 Pints.

Check this URL for information on viscosity:

I run Mobil 1 Synthetics for engine oil, transfer case, gearbox, and diffs, front and rear. Do not start using synthetics if you already have a leak. It will get worse. No leak, no problem.

For those who have a TDi:

I run Goodyear MT/R 225 on my wife's Landie and 245 on mine.

Any other questions?

That and the 12 offers to recieve £3 million for transferring money for some dodgy geezers in Africa, I reckon I could retire and buy me a small country ;-)
