Oily RR V8

Took the plunge yesterday and finally sorted the leaking valley gasket on my V8!. When I got the inlet manifold off the valley gasket was a sight to behold. It was a though some one had punched it from underneath, which had caused a small spilt about 5mm long!!. So thats were the oil was coming from then. Put it all back together, fill up the coolent etc, she starts fine. Go for test drive and was not a happy bunny when I saw oil still leaking from the front of the engine!!!. Went down pub to calm down.

Just had a look again this AM, cleaned all the oil off and left the thing running for 30mins...........I think the oil is leaking of where the distributer goes into the engine. As it's running the dizzy is moving ever so slighty and oil comes out the joint Is there a oil seal between the dizzy and engine or is it just a 'face fit'.

Dom J Slighty less oily than before

My experience is very limited in the V8 dizzy department but all the ones that I have seen have an o-ring seal. Also, the dizzy may need tightening against the block.

He's got it in one - there is an O ring on the dizzy shaft that is a fairly tight fit when new but, with age, gets slacker. You certain that the problem may not be the gasket that seals the end of the valley gasket itself (there's two metal clamps that are bolted down over the top of two rubber gaskets that hold each end of the valley in place - I've set one of those before with one end slightly pinched and I had an oil leak that used to drain into the depression to the n/s of the dizzy - made it look like the dizzy was leaking. Having said that this was a pretty minor leaking compared to what you are describing.

I fitted new end of valley gaskets yeterday, and put some sealent on for good measure!. I need the timing to be checked anyway, so when I do I'll pull the dizzy out and replace the O-ring. When the thing is idling, very little oil comes out. But rev it few times or drive it hard under load ie a hill and there's oil everywhere!!.

there is a 'o' ring on the dizzy shaft, which seals against the bore in the block. It has probably gone hard with age, and needs replacing.

The dizzy should have no movement on the block, check you have got everything tight.

check the breathers from the top of the rocker covers, sounds like they may be blocked.

Been there!

As per Austins post, check all your breathers. On mine (EFi) there is a metal pipe which runs into the air inlet casting upstream of the throttle butterfly. Apparently this pipe does an S bend inside the casting and is prone to blockage.

Clearing it out requires the removal of a couple of tiny core plugs and judicious use of a long twist drill in a couple of places.

Have not quite got around to unblocking mine yet, but found that disconnecting the rubber hose which should connect to this metal pipe has prevented the crank case presurising and allows the valley gasket to seal.
