Never mind that, I still can't get it to work. Where's the one for IE6 so I can put that back on?

On or around Mon, 05 Feb 2007 18:36:42 +0000, Alex enlightened us thusly:

I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. I suspect 7 only works with vista, don't it?

I only have IE6 on the machines here for 2 reasons: 1) it's nearly impossible to run XP without it and 2) for the crap websites which won't work in anything else.

Main browser here is SeaMonkey (ex-Mozilla) and I also have Opera 9 which is nice but I've gotten used to the way mozilla works.

IE7 works with XPSP2 as well.

Check out the IE Tab add-on. I use it with Firefox but it says it works with SeaMonkey too. With one click you can reopen a page with the IE renderer within your 'real' browser.

IE7 seems to work OK on my XP PC. Must admit I only use it when the website won't accept anything else, as I normally use Firefox.

Works fine here with XPH+SP2 and much faster than IE6 ...... although in the main I use Firefox.

If you want to revert back it will be best to do a IE6 search via the microsoft site because 'it' varies with what OS & SP(s) you have installed. In fact I also _understand_ the IE7 download for XP is different to the one for Vista but don't quote me on that.

Personally I don't touch IE or Outlook with a bargepole. I use Firefox/ Thunderbird (or Seamonkey). I also don't use XP either. This Win2K still has nothing more than the original IE (5? 6?) that came with it.

The problem is with a computer of a friend (XP+SP2) that hasn't been the same since he updated to IE7.

He/She could have a look around this link (if they haven't already).

The procedure for reverting back to IE6 is there too if they don't have any luck fixing their problem(s).

I think the problem stems from an install that went wrong. There seem to be no working ActiveX components, and IE7 does not appear in the list of programs available to be removed.

Assuming you were using XP with Admin status then if nought appears for IE7 in Add/Remove then I reckon you are right ....... you have a very duff installation. I do _not_ know what the best way forward is in that situation. However, if it were me and I was only playing with my own PC/Laptop I would restore to a point before the IE7 install, and also, if required, make use of my last hard Drive back-up image.

I asked on a support group I use and a chap posted this (beyond me so you are on your own here)

Updating or Reinstalling Internet Explorer 7

If a previous version of Internet Explorer 7 is already installed, installing the latest version of Internet Explorer 7 will automatically remove the previous version. After the previous version is removed, Setup will automatically restart your computer and then begin installing the new version.

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 RC1

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003

Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Add or Remove Programs. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7, click it, and then click Change/Remove. If you cannot find Internet Explorer 7 in Add or Remove Programs, click Start, click Run, type %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note: %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can usually be found at C:\Windows. To do this, you need to have "view hidden folders" enabled.

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3, Beta 2, Beta 2 Preview, or Beta 1

To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3, Beta 2, Beta 2 Preview, or Beta 1 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:

Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Add or Remove Programs. Scroll down to "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 3", "Internet Explorer 7 Beta

2", or "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview", click it, and then click Change/Remove. If you cannot find any version of Internet Explorer 7 in the previous step, select the Show Updates check box at the top of the Add or Remove Programs dialog box, scroll down to Windows XP - Software Updates, select "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview" or "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1", and then click Change/Remove. If you cannot find an Internet Explorer 7 entry using Add or Remove Programs, try running these commands. Each is for a different release of Internet Explorer 7, so only one will succeed. To run any of these commands, you need to have the View hidden folders option enabled. In the commands below, %windir% is the location of your Windows directory, which can usually be found at C:\Windows. To run these commands, click Start, click Run, and then type one of the following:

%windir%\ie7beta3\spuninst\spuninst.exe. %windir%\$NtUninstallie7beta1$\spuninst\spuninst.exe. %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.exe. %windir%\$NtUninstallie7b2pmx$\spuninst\spuninst.exe. %windir%\$NtUninstallie7beta2$\spuninst\spuninst.exe. If the uninstall process causes the computer to stop responding while removing Internet Explorer 7, restart the computer, delete any custom sound schemes created after installing the Internet Explorer 7 Beta, and then try to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 again.

Anyway hope that helps ........... Richard
