OT-ish Transplanting alarms

I have two RRCs with alarm/imobilsers:

The 1988 RR has a Laserline unit which is controlled by radio keyfobs. I think that I can buy replacements (but haven't checked). Similarly I think that I can get a replacement for the ultrasonic interface, but I'm not bothered. If I re-made the bent wire link to the central locking solenoid in the driver's door it would operate the central locking.

The 1990 RRC has an unknown unit which is disarmed by means of a tear-drop shaped thing that I have to (briefly) stab into a socket in the dash. It seems to be only an imobiliser as nothing happens when I open the doors - no matter how long I have them open - but there are a pair of US transducers at the top of the A posts.

Problem: I have only one of the tear-drop thingies and doubt that I will be able to find a replacement. Also the 1990 RR has one set of locks for the doors and one set for the ignition and tailgate.

Question: Is it within the realms of success that I can remove the unknown unit and replace it with the Laserline unit and still be able to start the 1990 RR? I will not re-fit the unknown unit to the 1988 RR.

The benefit would be that I could secure a backup key for the doors near the boot area and carry only the remote fob and ignition key around with me.

What do you think?

TIA

yep sounds like an immobiliser have a word with a specialist alarm fitter he should be able to supply an additional transducer quite easily and check and certify the system- the unit you have fitted will be cunningly integrated in to the wiring system ( assuming its a pukka job) remove it without knowing how its been fitted and you will not be starting the car for a while as if its a Thatcham approved cat 2 unit it will disable two circuits to prevent a thief doing a quick rewire / hotwire. you can add an additional unit for entry protection ( your other system for example or any basic alarm) or upgrade to the equivalent Thatcham cat 1 have a word with your insurers mine insisted on cat 2 as a minimum on both the Rangie and now on Kato. Hello Derek

The reason I want to replace the 'unknown' unit in the 1990 RR is because of the 'one key for the door and another key for the ignition' situation - not for security purposes. As I suspect that the 'unknown' unit cannot be made to operate remotely, no amount of additional key fobs will solve the 'two key' situation.

My insurers (MoreThan) do not care what make/model of imobiliser is fitted - the presence of one is a bonus. Sureterm wanted a Thatcham Cat1 system and were far more expensive - go figure.

Having studied the wiring on the 1988 RR the installation of the Laserline unit is not terribly clever - and I have the installation certificate! I think I should have said in my original posting that the Laserline unit is Thatcham Cat1

The difficulty with these alarm systems is that the manufacturers do not intend that a thief can bridge a wire using a colour code so make all the wires the same colour. That means tracking back the wires to the loom and tagging each one individually then remaking the connections they are intended to disable its not something I would like to try . I would be inclined to keep the teardrop thingy ( sensor) alarm get a spare from an alarm fitter and add in a natty japanese remote .Dunno if you can get replacement barrels keyed alike worth checking with a dealers though. Got to be said the older LR door locks are pretty naff my workmate loaned his jack to another bloke who opened my car by mistake both Disco's Derek

Land Rover keys ... !

I know of one 200, 300 and TD5 that can all be opened with the 200's key! And each of the others will open the others.....and the keys look nothing alike?! Of course the alarms go off .... but heck.

Hi Derek

Yep the Laserline alarm wire pairs are all black. But the installer was lazy and simply cut the appropriate circuit and inserted a loop from the alarm. I don't know how things are for the 'unknown' imobiliser. The idea of a second door locking system is worth considering - although that would mean substituting one key for one, presumably bigger, remote fob. As to re-keying; I looked at swapping the locks and ignition barrel from the '88 to the '90 but the parts are different as confirmed by Beamsends. A replacement set of door, tailgate and ignition locks is available - at 1/4 of the value of the vehicle!!

Once upon a time you could get sets of barrel separately not stunningly pricy and I have been know to modify barrels with a dremel. Of course it does mean potentially more keys will fit the lock but if you want to try simply remove the barrel insert the key you wish to use and gently grind down any of the fingers that sit proud blow away the brass powder and check for any rough edges and replace not exactly rocket science but do-able.
