OT: knowledge of Nissan X-Trail SatNav - or any vehicle SatNav with joystick control

Sorry for the OT-ness but the membership here has a great deal of diverse knowledge (grovel over)

Our office X-Trail has a dash mounted SatNav that is operated via a small joystick. Left, right, up and down deflection of the joystick moves a cursor in those directions. Selection of a letter or function is done by pressing the joystick in - like a push button. All works well except the vital push button which is becoming increasingly erratic. I presume that there is some inadequate non-wiping switch on the back of the push button - maybe an awful 'conductive rubber pad across PCB pads' effort.

Short of stripping the dash - something that I'm unlikely to be allowed to do nor will I will able to do illegally as the car resides at the office - can anyone suggest a solution? Please!!!!

TIA

Richard

This seems too simple for you not to have considered it ....

It's the company's - yes? Report it as broken? If the sat-nav is considered essential to those using the vehicle it's surely in the company's interests to get it mended.

Alternatively forget it and use a standalone device - it might be cheaper for the company to provide one if it's reluctant to fund repairs to the on-board unit. I'm guessing that there's no lease/warranty cover.

Even if you were free to dismantle and investigate, there's a pretty good chance that the switch is sufficiently sealed to prevent you from applying any restorative measures. However it could be a loose connection or a broken PCB track which may be accessible.

My Pathfinder has the same system but also has an 'enter' button on the steering wheel as part of the audio controls, would asume the X- Trail has the same? If so just use this to select the required letter etc.

Thanks both

Yes, it is a company vehicle but that means that the company pays for all repairs. There's no lease etc. As it's a government organisation undergoing a radical reduction in offices and staff I cannot imagine that they will pay for SatNav surgery or an external device. Nor do I think that the dealer we are obliged to use is all that competent. The A/C system has been making awful noises for the last couple of years - but only intermittently and only after turning left - and they can't fix that problem.

There's no 'enter button' on the wheel :-(

If it's a government department just write a letter to your line manager saying there's a safety issue and you feel people are being endangered by a vehicle that is not fully serviceable.

Stand back and await developments...

A non-working SatNav doesn't impair the safe functioning of the vehicle - unfortunately. Not all the vehicles in the fleet have Satnav.

A completely bust one probably doesn't affect safety, nothing to distract the driver. However but one that is partially functioning, ie you have to press a button several times to get a response and also take your eyes of the road for longer than neccessary to check it has responded is another matter...

The solution might be to remove or disable the SatNav of course rather than repair the button or, more likely, replace the whole unit.

Have you thought of phoning your Dealer or even the UK HO for Nissan, it might be a recognised problem with a factory fix available.

You also mentioned air con that doesn't work and an odd noise when turning left.

As for 'doesn't affect safety', say so and see what happens.

Government departments are paranoid about safety.

With my experience of some Government organisations, now is not the time to be contacting the manager. It merely raises your profile and you may find you are the next to go unles you are aware of some doubtful actions that the manger has carried out. Is he receiving something for using that dealer? My future is assured - for the moment ;-)

No kick backs regarding fleet maintenance - it's all 'managed' through Capita

Anyone in the public service who isn't seeing his line manager a couple of times a week over coffee is pretty senior. He/she/it is not going to be bothered about anything much to do with getting the sack, and is almost certainly senior enough to get his car fixed.

Then you're on an almost guaranteed win if you do complain with some sort of case, even if it is a bit flakey.
