P38 Aircon woes update

Right, we might be getting somewhere, been dow to Warrens place in Sheffield & put the car on Rovacom. It had a fault showing on the heater matrix sensor (as i suspected) along with a few out of calibration errors that he cleared. I am going to replace the clip on heater sensor at the same time as doing the heater O rings. He also drew my attention to a fix for the lazy AC pump clutch, apparently it doesnt get enough voltage so doesnt engage some of the time. There is a repair kit number YMQ104590AA That fixes this with a relay.

You can easily tell if this has been done by looking at the relay box under the bonnet. There will be a realy in the 2nd alaong slot on the bottom row (normally left empty)

This is a more than likely cause of mine, along with the fact i need to take out the shims too.

HTH someone!

Hi Nige,

I've recently joined the AFL P38a division so your experiences most appreciated.

My compressor clutchwas not engaging, so I had no aircon. The shim trick worked for me, without the need to do the wiring loom mod, so would suggest you try that first, as it is free!

Also found a company in the States who will supply the clutch only for $100 dollars (plus delivery (and a $50 dollar "core charge", possibly a surcharge if you don't supply an exchange unit?)).

Hi matey, how easy do the shims come out?

5 minutes.

Undo central nut (not too tight, can hold flange with other hand to stop it spinning).

Remove flange (belt and pulley stay in place). Do this slowly and carefully, shim will either stay behind on shaft or come out stuck to flange.

Discard shim.

Re-assemble - pulley bore is splined with one "missing" spline, so will only go on in one orientation.

Bob's your uncle.

REALLY satisfying fix.
