My P38 air suspension has become slow to pump up -- ageing pump, slight leaks etc. I know that if the pump up exceeds a fixed time limit of about 10 minutes you get the dreaded "EAS Fault" message. My question is this: if you switch the engine off for a short time after say 9 minutes does the clock start again, giving you another 10 minutes? Or not?
Yes, that will give you longer! It is based on a 'continuous' pumping time. I think the time-out is 20 mins (don't quote me on that), but there is also a thermal cut-out on there too - tho I'm not sure if that triggers an EAS fault or not - it probably will!
"Compressor Test. Evacuate the system and attach a pressure valve. With a door open and the engine running, time how long it takes for the compressor to stop running. The pump should stop at 10 bar (150 psi) in 6 minutes. If it stops earlier wait 3 minutes to see if it starts due to a thermal overload"
and ...
"The compressor will operate if the pressure switch is open and the thermal switch is closed. If the thermal switch closes, the compressor will be shut off for three minutes after which time the system will check the switch again. If the switch is now open, compressor operation will resume otherwise another three minute wait will be enforced. This avoid short-term cycling of the compressor when overheating"
