Poor starting

Hi chaps

Anyone know what the resistance of a glow plug should be (300tdi)?? Staring has become a pain recently and I want to check these first.

Not sure about the actual value, but you might want to just check for continuity, if it's burnt out that will tell you.

Yes, tried that. One is as dead as dead thing and the others all show different reading, for 100 ohms to 1 K. Might be advisable to change the lot me thinks.

Thanks anyway.

I'll second that. Also, they are a small business (sorry if your not Richard) & need your business more than Paddocks or Craddocks.

As of 5 mins ago they are cheaper!

Site will be updated tomorrow, they are now 3.90 + VAT = 4.48

Please feel free to tell us if we're not competetive, we'll always do our best to respond - we have 8,500 or so parts on the site (and rising daily), and keeping up to date is stunningly long work....

OK, OK. Sorry Richard, didn't mean to start a war :-)). I must admit I only checked Paddocks as I drive passed the place every week. You appear to the best value at the moment. Any idea why some places are quoting £13/£14 each for them, are they gold plated???

kind of thing that comes up on ebay, I got a set for my 2.5 n/a from ebay cheaper than paddocks.

Thinking about it for a moment, for something intended to get hot in a

12v system, those sound a bit high. Could just be a bad contact with the meter probes. If they're single-wire and return through the engine, the earthing could be bad too. 100 ohms gives you only 1.5 watts, which sounds pretty futile.

At the price quoted downthread, it isn't worth messing about, and you have one definite dud anyway, but I would check resistance to battery earth-lead on the return. Bad earthing will affect the starter too.

nah. just crooks.

FWIW, the only sensible way to test glowplugs is to pull 'em out, wire 'em to a fat bit of wire, hold the casing on the batter - terminal and the wire on battery +.

holding it with a pair of pliers makes sense, it gets hot.

The *tip* of the plug should glow bright red within a few seconds (max about

10, I should say).

I've seen ones that glow half-way along, which are no better than a dead one.

4 glowplugs in parallel draw about 50A, so they'll be about 1 ohm each normally, which is why it's difficult to measure 'em.

Thanks to everyone on this thread. They will be changed ASAP. What surprised me was that the dash glow timer light still worked, maybe I expect too much!!

It was a Tdi you were talking about wasn't it ?

In that case the light is fed from the timer relay and is no indication that the heater plugs are working. Infact the only thing you can be 100% sure of when the light comes on is that the bulb is not blown. ! But that is common to alot of things.
