Don't know if this has been posted here before.

The last link at the bottom of the page makes 'interesting' reading, particularly penalties.

£1000 per day fine for things like busses and fire engines? What the hell are they playing at now?

You can put your registration and make into their webshite and it tells you if you'll be ripped off, the pinz is OK as it's not diesel, the landy is OK until 2010 then it becomes non-compliant and liable to a £500 daily fine if a "substantial" (their words) but not specified daily charge isn't paid.

It's an amazingly slow website, probably the amount of people wanting to see democracy in action.

Still, it's a good way to keep vehicles out of london, it's hard enough navigating the streets of the place as it is but now there's random tax cameras all over the place taking photos and issuing bills for transgressing rules you don't get told about until it's too late. Best to just leave the place to the world's trash.

Might get some of those smokey old buses off the road!

Blimey, even motorways in the area are affected, other than the M25. Take a wrong turn near London and end up on the M4/M3 etc into the shitehole and you'll be liable to pay the daily charge, by midnight of

*that day*. If you don't know about it in advance, the first warning you'll get is when you get a bill for somewhere between £500 and £1,000.

I got caught out by the congestion charge like that, I'd never heard of it, wandered into London for some reason, found out about the charge, but by the time I knew about it, it was too late to pay and I got stung for £40 IIRC. That was bad enough, £500-£1,000 is a lot worse. It's this "pay by midnight with no warning" bit that makes it much worse than it otherwise would be.

So, diesel landy owners, make sure you don't forget if you need to go anywhere near the shitehole, or it could get expensive.

At present Nov '01 TD4 not subject to LEZ ....... that's good because I do travel to Westminster Bridge area a fair bit.

I see Caravan Club (CC) are a bit upset. They have two London based sites (Crystal Palace and Abbey Wood) which are used as bases a lot for people visiting London. Both sites get a lot of 4X4s (tow cars) and Motor Homes. The latter often from abroad. Mind you when I use Abbey Wood once I am there I don't use the 4X4 anymore ....... train straight in to London Bridge or Cannon Street and Oyster Card thereafter ..... dead easy and much better than driving around. So I can't see there is a big issue really for the CC ....... initial potential 'revenue dip' driven panic Imo.

Heh heh. As one who actually lives in the place I wouldn't dream of driving into the centre during the working day. I use the decent public transport if needing to go to the centre - or go around it if journeying elsewhere. I've only once paid the congestion charge - and that last Friday when trying to get to the M1 but couldn't due to the floods so turned round and went home by the shortest route.

Which planet do you inhabit before visiting earth? ;-)

So how are we going to run our cars on oil squeezed manually from lentils by guatamalan socialist workers? Ken's not thought this through.

You're a typical londoner then. It doesn't occur to you, or to those who dream these rules up, that people outside of London don't neccessarily know the rules that are put in place in London. Why would I know the congestion charge rules? Until then I had no knowledge of them. Do you know the parking rules in Frome? The best car park to use in Salisbury?

Silly me, I should have used public transport to cart 40 kilos of computer gear split over 3 large, heavy bags, all valuable. Ditto those silly chaps in vans who do things like plumbing, cable laying etc. Get on the tube, all of you, never mind that you get treated worse than cattle off to the slaughter..

Can't stand the place. Last time I stayed there, I couldn't sleep a wink so left and drove home!

C'mon. You know about 'Ken', but had *never* heard of the congestion charge? And missed all the signs at the roadside warning you of it? Somehow I think you're telling porkies...

No no, don't be so mean, there's also a cashpoint.

Mind you there was a "food festival" a few weeks ago, he must have been lost but I did see someone in a new Lamborghini roadster, bright orange, and he didn't look like he'd knicked it. I almost ran him over in the pinz as we were both trying to figure out the daft diversion system that had been set up due to the food festival.

He's right, a typical Londoner! No personal offence intended, Dave, but not everything centres around London. Most of us manage perfectly well without it.

We've heard about Ken, we've even heard about the congestion charge but we've never been there to see the signs and won't be in any rush to do so.

As for knowing the rules in advance - it's not the sort of thing thing that we expect to have to bone up on.

Think you've missed the point. Ian claimed to never have heard of the congestion charge and then went on to complain he was penalised for not knowing how to pay it. Perhaps I should try that one next time when parking in gawd knows where? I don't understand parking restrictions or having to pay to use a car park? Or how to pay the toll on whatever bridge?

You go to central London on a weekday as a pleasure trip? Just following your nose?
