Someone else I know had an identical problem on a similar vehicle, in the end it was cured by rebalancing the front wheels. He had apparently hit a high kerb when swerving to avoid another vehicle who had pulled in front of him for no reason.

Mind you, from my own experience, the 2002 Discovery steering is vague anyhow compared to the current model!

Thanks for the comment. I think I can rule out wheels/tyres as they have since been rotated front/back and new tyres fitted at 46,000kms.

I am beginning to wonder if the vagueness is in fact typical for the model. May need to test drive a few 2002 models to compare.

From new I was very impressed with the steering having completed a lot of high speed dirt road driving with what I always considered as being very direct and precise steering control. Maybe I was lucky to have a very tight set up to start with, but as it has worn in what I am experiencing now is more typical for the model. The only thing that concerns me is the change was very noticeable and happened at a very precise point in time and whilst the road was rough it was not as if I had hit anything hard that could have done damage.

Sounds like the honeymoon is over.....

p.s. and today the steering was back to it's old good feeling....
