Re: diesel (Australia)

Yes, I saw that item.

A couple of years ago now, I became concerned at the apparent difference in performance/consumption when using "diesel" from discount service stations in Sydney,Oz. Since then, I only use the major brands.

Well, it'll happily run on old chip fat, which I'll guess you have in Oz? ;-)

I know a Dutch scientist who reckons that the UK have the worst quality LPG. So bad in places that it's not even classed as clean enough to cook by (bad news for all us 'Happy Campers').

I reckon that your reported analysis is correct: They're all at it :-(

They'd still be $millions ahead, rumours were rife back in the early 90s that they were fuel substituting and running fuel ex Brisbane into Victoria (getting Qld heating oil and substituting it as diesel fuel and not paying Vic taxes). You could make about $15,000 profit after transport costs on a heating oil load ex Brisbane to Melbourne. The company involved were also a large crude seed oil and tallow carrier so I wonder what else was getting into the fuel?

Mind you some of the oil companies were known to turn a blind eye to diesel going out the gate as heating oil, it would be consigned to another storage company. The storage company would not even put it into tanks, just issue new paperwork for delivery to a service station. Just too easy, they pocketed about 35 cents per litre of excise.

Back in the late 80s there was a South Australian company that was disposing of prescribed waste at bargain prices - into diesel and then burnt through unsuspecting owners of truck engines. God knows what long term illnesses those bastards have caused to the population. Cant remember if they were caught or just went belly up.

IIRC, that is ten times the amount of tax that they tried to avoid. You can't blame the prosecutors and I applaud the decision. If I vary the fuel in my Disco, I want to do it with full knowledge, not because of someone being greedy and not respecting my vehicle, or my rights.

The penalty may be reduced on appeal, but I think the defendants suspect that they got off lightly and may not appeal.

I reckon _FINE_ the bastards out of existence !!!

Several years ago I'd cleaned and replaced the filter elements in the ( two) diesel fuel filters on my beast and had a run up the highway for a 'fill' ...... I barely got home and the new ( Donaldson Three stage) filter was filled with 'Vegemite' !!!! So much for shit in fuel ( and this was an 'Ampol' servo.... which I delight in now noting their almost negligible trade!)

Since then, I'm _very_ particular of fuel sources. The best and cleanest around here is from the 'Caltex Twins' on the F3. ( huge turnover) .... The worst is from a 'discount diesel' servo further up the old highway that's recognizable by the fleet of 'unmarked' tankers scattered around ......... _No-one_ I know would buy the 'discounted' diesel from this place.

So.... yeah, it's like you said...--- "... it's what you pay for...".

One of the 'indicators' I look for when in 'other places' is the colour of the diesel. The older it is, the darker it is, mainly because of the 'bug' ( osmotic relationship between the algae and bacteria) proliferation. Though I use a good 'additive' that kills this ( amongst other attributes) , I look for _clean_ , ostensibly 'fresh' diesel from servos with apparent large turnovers of fuel, _never_ the small stops with one diesel bowser.

But, ya still can't be certain..... so, for those bastards that adulterate fuel, when they're caught, .... then ** FINE ** the bastards to oblivion !!!! ..... Fifty Three Million $$$ wasn't enough !!! The mongrel stated how it "Wouldn't affect his business much....." in an interview on the Grand Cretiniser the other night. .... He should've been roughly rolled in a diesel and rock-salt paste and staked out on the side of the highway in a blazing Ozzie sun for a couple of weeks as a 'reminder', and as an 'example' to 'the others' whom he referred to as "doing it, too" !!!! This seemed to give some justification in his mind!!! ........ At least the $50 mill. fine was a pleasant change to the 'community service' ( casually picking up litter during weekends ) that some of the blots in our community get !! What a joke!

Now, _before_ I get warmed up on this topic, :))) ..........

... frodo.
