Re: P38A CD/radio - mute problem sorted!

Thanks to all for the advice. Little white button under the plastic trim plate seems to do nothing, but removing fuse 1 under the RH seat, counting to 5, and replacing did the trick. Radio/CD now back to normal. Just make sure you have the code handy.

Cheers all.

Thanks for the feedback. Did you fix the root cause to stop it happening again?

If I knew the root cause I would fix it. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue why it happened (as usual). So no, I didn't.

I reckon the cause is the switch pack on the steering wheel. It might be worth cleaning the contacts, or you might have to replace the switch pack. The danger in doing this is that you will have to remove the airbag module from the steering wheel, and there are many things to be aware of when doing so.

WARNGING: I accept no responsibility for anyone getting an airbag in the face from following this procedure. Read the workshop and electrical troubleshooting manuals before proceeding. The airbag module contains explosive charges and produces heat and poisonous gases when it goes off (and they fit these for safety!!!!)

To get at the switches, disconnect the battery (both terminals, negative first), then wait for AT LEAST 10 MINUTES before proceeding. Then undo the 4 Torx-30 screws in the back of the steering wheel and the airbag will come free. With the power off for the last ten minutes you can now safely disconnect the wiring, and the play with the switches to your heart's content.

Each switch has a resistor to switch a different voltage back to the radio to indicate which button can be pressed. Dirty contacts will increase the resistance to turn into a "MUTE" signal (which there isn't actually used).

Make sure you remove all traces of any solvent, refit the airbag module, and reconnect the battery.

Brilliant, Andy, and I'm sure you are right, but next time (if) it happens, I think I'll just remove/replace fuse 1 and reprogramme the radio - total time about 3 minutes, risk of duffing self in face with airbag zero.

Thanks for the info - I have kept a copy for future reference!
