RRC Heater problems...HELP!

RRC 3.9

Noticed a heater problem now that the weather has started to turn cold.

Engine runs up to working temperature with no problems with temp guage sitting just under half way, but the heater blows cold air unless I bring the engine revs up.

Leave the engine at idle and I lose all heating and the heater blows cold, rev the engine and the heat returns.

Water levels checked and ok with no leaks anywhere.

Seems there is not enough flow of hot water, could it be water pump, sticking thermostat or air lock ????

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated, thanks

I have a permanent heater problem, comes with the territory of a series motor. Driving off this morning was like getting into a cold bath. I don't see how my heater is ever going to do anything much as the engine never gets warm enough.

I had a similar problem in my old 3.5Efi, turned out the matrix was blocked, in my case by a previous oner having used a rad weld type material.

Although mine eventually produced almost no heat whatsoever no matter what type of driving.

Pig of a job to replace, most of the dash has to come out but it has to be done.

try the trick I've used a few times, reverse the flow through the matrix. buggered if I know why it works, but it does.

It seems that it would un-stuck everything in the heater matrix and send it back to the main radiator. If its constantly getting gunked up one way...why not reverse flow it like a back flush. I see the logic.

As there is some water getting to the matrix I think I will take off a hose and 'flush' the system from the water fill 'stand pipe'and see what comes out!!!!

Failing that, try and suss out which way the water flows and try a back flush, works on a home central hearting system!!!!

Thanks
