Series 11a Clutch

I am trying to get my Series 2a back on the road after a 2 year lay off. All seems fine except the clutch operation. The pedal feels soft (compared to my

110, I can't remember what this one was like last time I used it) and the clutch does not release. The slave piston moves about 10mm. Is this enough to release the plate? If the clutch plate has stuck would this give the symptoms?

Any help/suggestions gratefully received.

10mm sounds like enough to me - without having checked it - all it has to do is relieve the pressure - there should be no lost movement past there. The other possibility is that one of the pins transmitting torque from the slave cylinder to the release shaft via a short tube may be broken giving a lot of lost motion. You can see whether the actual clutch release is moving by taking off the gearshift which uncovers an inspection hole in the top of the clutch housing. If the clutch pedal has resistance after no more than an inch or so of movement and this resistance remains more or less the same until the M/C hits the stop or the pedal the floor you can probably assume the hydraulics and release mechanism are working - if you are getting a lot of lost motion on the pedal, then there is either a hydraulic problem (probably M/C) or one of the pins referred to above is broken.

After two years of standing, it's entirely possible that the plate has rusted up & glued itself to the flywheel & cover. If you're lucky it'll come off with a bang if you give it a bit of a thumping by a tow start with clutch depressed, else you'll be up for separating engine & gearbox ... good luck!
