Series 3 LWB replacement possibly?

Hi, I got a 1979 Series 3 LWB. It's very much a secounbd car, mainly for off road use. I want to replace it. Nothing fancy, but would like something a bit warmer and easier to drive on the road. But it's main use is for off road, so needs to be a decent off roader with good ground claerence. No Jap crap, please. The SIII is worth about a grand, so budget would be around that. Not much point on spedning loads on something that gets covered in mud and may well end up sliding into a tree or a ditch.

I have been thinking about a Range Rover or a Discovery? Any good? Relaiable? Problems? Can they cut it off road? Better than the S3 or should I just keep it? Is it wirth trying to make it more comfertable/warmer or is it just cheaper/easyer to get a Range Rover or a Discovery?

Well I'm a big fan of the early one-tens, I first had a hardtop and now have a csw, both 1984 vintage. tough as a S3, better ride on the coil springs, heater blows fast and hot (enough for me anyway).

Though if you don't mind a V8 then I'd point you towards a RR, they are around at £1k and they are quite capable off-road and much more refined on-road than a S3.
