series 3 speedo

I'm trying to work out if there's a fault with the speedometer in my Series III. I 've had the vehicle a few weeks and all seemed fine initially but while doing a long run from my old address to my new home in south Wales I noticed the readings seemed to be going crazy. At anything above very slow speed the needle swings around wildly and, even when it steadies, it seems to be reading way too high (eg. there's no way you'll convice me a fairly standard 2.25 petrol series 3 will do 80mph uphill into a headwind!).

Is this just yet another glorious Landrover quirk or is there something awry? If so what would be the prime suspects for the cause?

In case it's of relevence the vehicle is ex-military but has 12v electrics.

I put my money on a stiff or kinked speedo cable.

Or possibly an already broken cable that is skipping at the break point. Relatively easy to fix but you will, almost certainly, need to remove the floor pans and gearbox cover.

I've never tried, but i'm pretty sure i could replace a speedo cable without taking the floor and g-box cover out.

To the original poster: A lot of landy speedos do that. Sometimes a load of wd40 down the end of the cable will improve them. If not then its probably broken, badly rusty or kinked somewhere (as Alex says).

so whats the knack required to refit a speedo cable,?

ive replaced mine and cant get a mph out of it, this was 8 month ago, so im not realy fussed about how fast i go,

There shouldnt be much to it!

Make sure that you got the center bit that actually turns inside the cable in the hole properly at the gearbox end. Same for the Speedo end too i guess, though its easier to see what youre doing here, so it should be easier to do right.

If you take the cable off at the speedo end you should be able to see the centre of the cable turning, if not then theres something wrong at the gearbox end.

I have replaced a broken speedo cable on a srss2 without lifting or removing any panels as it fits externaly along its length after leaving the bulkhead.

MARK EDWARD COTTLE tried to scribble ...

On my S3 this was cured by a new speedo cable. The cable hadn't broken, but had 'unwound' and seemed to spin normally for a while, then wind up and release for a while, then spin normally ad nauseum .. ;)

It's an easy change .. ;)

I would say that is quite probable I have had speedos act up like that before which turned out to be a break.

so, somethings amiss on mine then, as ive uncoupled it twice and still nothing,

its due for its annual bodge in four months so ill ponder said problem till then,

I dont think you will fail for not having a working speedo.

I dont know of anyone failing for having a broken or dodgy speedo.. Also, since for all my landy MOT's ive actually driven the vehicle in and out of the garage the tester hasnt had a chance to notice anyhow!

This MOT guide

says thatthe speedo is non testable too. With the accuracy of landy speedos in general anyhow, hardly seems worth having one!.

However, a few years ago one of my mates got pulled over by the police for a vehicle check, and I think that they bought up the lack of speedo and made him fix it. Seems a bit silly if its not an MOT testable item though!

its not reallly a problem,

as it feels like im doing 40

it sounds like im doing 80

and looks like im doing 25

so i just calculate a mean average.

On a similar note.. mine - which has always read ~10mph too slow, has now developed a new feature whereby it spins round to ~current reported speed+30mph if I lift off the throttled and then settles back. odd?
