Series III gearbox

Just got my first 109 series III. Perhaps I should of test drove it first :( It won't go into 2nd gear when moving. Guess the gearbox is stuffed? Everything else is perfect, so is worth doing. Can anyone give any advice on the fault and who's a good/cheap supplier of gearboxes. Cheers.

Before you get too anxious, check the bottom end of the gear lever. There's a bit of work to take the panels off to get access, and you might need some new fixings for the floorplates. But a common cause of gear-change problems is wear to the ball on the bottom of the stick, which engages with the selectors.

While you have the cover panel off, it's worth checking the detent balls and springs, and cleaning and lubing the linkages for the 4wd and hi/lo selectors.

If you do have this problem, there can be some noticable rattle to the gear lever.

A bit more info.....The gear lever feels fine, but I've not taken the tunnel off yet to check the linkage, detent balls etc. With the engine running, I can select all gears, but with the car moving can only select 1,3 and 4, up and down the box. Trying to select 2nd causes much grinding, lifting the clutch a bit occasionally gets it in, but it will jump back out as soon as the throttle is touched. While driving in first, there is quite a whining noise from the gearbox too. Also, a bit of advice? There is an overdrive box fitted, though I don't know which make. Is this engaged with the lever back or forward?

Cheers.

THis sounds like the synchro rings need replacing. Not a particularly dificult job if you are an enthusiastic weekend warrior with a good workshop manual.

Try the overdirve lever forward and back, and see which way gives faster top speed or far a given engine noise. Should be easy to tell.
