Shakes Like Hell - Prop Shaft?

Hi Group,

Further to recent post and many gratefully received replies:

(the series 3 shakes like hell at about 50mph, with noise coming from the front?)

As suggested, took her on a run, got up to speed and pressed the clutch, the vibrations still there.

I jacked the front end up, checked for bearing play, damaged tyres etc, all seemed fine, except for a clicking/odd crunch noise from seemingly the front end of the propshaft. Could damaged universal joints cause this problem or would they be unoticiable?

Following suggestions from the other replies, I still have to swap the wheels around to check the balance, but it does not have free wheeling hubs, can I remove the front prop and drive around to test the drivetrain theory without causing any damage to the gearbox? - Im sure the answer to this is yes, but would like confirmation.

Thanks

Roger

I was going to suggest a lare lump of caked on mud on the inside of one the wheels but you seem to have found an alternative .

Good luck

You can run the vehicle safely without the front prop in place, in fact as it is a series vehicle and not full time 4x4 the prop shaft will be doing nothing but being driven by the diff as the car rolls along (in on-road : high range+2wd) , if you have free wheeling hubs you could alternatively disengage them to stop the front prop turning. Another thing to check first is that the transfer box is definately in 2 wheel drive and hasn't stuck in

4x4. To do this jack one front wheel off the ground and try to spin it with the handbrake applied if it will not turn you are stuck in 4x4 and need to check the linkage. Hope this helps, Fergus

Yes, take off the front prop and see if it makes any difference to the vibration. Damaged UJ's would (I would think) be very noticeable, and should be fixed (see recent thread about propshafts coming undone at speed!).

Hi!

Sounds obvious, but I nearly missed this! My 90 was shaking badly - it got worse as I sped up. I had checked the tyres previously and they looked OK. But when the shaking got worse I found a bulge on the tyre and some of the wires sticking out - it was about to blow. So I reckon that either the bad bit of tyre was standing on the ground when I checked it previously, or the fault in the casing was not not yet visible externally. So, if you haven't done so already (you probably have!) - please check your tyres very carefully, not missing the bits in contact with the ground!

Cheers, Rick
