slightly OT. fuel pump.

i have a problem with my mazda 626, 1982 model. when i turn the key normally i can hear a ticking sound from underneath the car which is the fuel pump working. it then suddenly stopped working and the float chamber in the carb is now empty and obviously, there is no combustion in the engine. the tank is almost empty (probably under 5 litres), would the fuel pump automatically turn off when the tank is near empty?

sorry it isn't a landrover, but any help would be, well, very helpful!

If it's anything like the standard Facet pumps on various Land Rover models, they last for years ... until they stop. Sometimes they won't start and hitting them will 'prompt' them, sometimes they are just dead. If there's power to the pump, chances are the pump is due for imminent replacement.

Before doing anything else, there's usually a fuse for fuel pumps (except on early Range Rovers) so check it before ripping things apart!
