starter wont stop!

landy has been off the road for a while, just put two fully charged batteries back in and tried to start.

The first attempt sounding promising (didn't start but sounded like it would in another couple of attempts)

The second attempt I turned the key and the stater motor started up again, but a noise by the batteries made me stop turning the key - but the starter didn't stop. A little alarmed I turned they key all the way back, and then took it out completely - starter still going and not sounding too good either. uh oh. luckily the batteries are on the inside (not under the bonnet) and I hadn't put the cover on, or tightned up the cables, so I was able to yank one of the negative leads off which stopped the starter motor... but there was a nasty burning smell...

Soooo... any guesses as to what would cause that? it worked fine last time I used it, but hasn't been used for a while (months).

Sounds like the soleniod has stuck on... not good as in any other circumstances you could have had a fire on your hands.. just one of those things.. I'd give it a strip down and refurb but if your not that way inclined get a recon one. A good hammering may get it going temporarily but I would'nt trust it given your scenario.

Of course it could also be a wiring issue and failed ignition switch so you need to check that the lead to the starter isn't suppling a constant 12v (not the heavy lead the thin 12 supply which trails up towards the dash). SImplest check for this would be to disconnect this feed to the starter and retry connecting the battery...make a temporary switch to kill this feed. If it's not that then its the starter / soleniod. You don't mention the type of truck so the solenoid may be mounted on the bulkhead if it's a series motor.

Guess - ignition switch. But could be the solenoid contact welded together. What engine is it? and what model Landrover? - this sort of information helps! JD

SIII 109 ffr (24v) 2.25

solonoid is new (well, about a year old, but not used very much...)

also the negative terminal on the battery now has a burn mark on it - presumably caused when the cable was yanked off?
