Tacho troubles

300 Tdi Discovery 96 auto.

Let the wife drive the car home from London to Scotland on Sunday. Now the tachometer needle is dancing about. It hovers around the area it should be for a while, but then drop to near zero and back again. Not the usual steady reading! Any advice on where to start looking for a cure before I delve into the manual would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Davy M.

Connection to alternator is dirty. Either unplug clean and replace, or remove it and re-fit a new connector .. ;)

Dead easy fix!

Think on them it comes off the alternator, anything wrong with that will sod it up big time.

PS

Don't over tighten the posts on the rear of the Alternator

They're soft metal and snap rather easily

Good shout guys. Checked the alternator and found the terminal had become slack. Nipped it up with pliers, cleaned the terminal and sorted the problem.

Thanks again Davy Murray
