TD5 Intercoolers... Is there a need to upgrade????

Hi all,

Following on from a post I made a bit ago about having my 2000 TD5 90 chipped / remapped.

A few people here pointed me to certain knowledgable chaps with regard to obtaining more power.

One 'specialist' has said that the intercooler needs to be upgraded to keep the air cool(er) and the other that the standard TD5 intercoolers are very good and dont really need to be changed...

So, opening to the floor, whats the opinion? When combining with a power upgrade (Im looking to take to about 180 - 200bhp if possible without adjusting boost), should the intercooler be upgraded also?

I am aware that one of the LRO 90's went to JE for a stage 2 tune and they swapped the intercooler...

Thoughts welcomed.

Bear in mind that any performance increase comes with a loss of engine life. To my mind the only way to get significant power increases is to increase boost and this will affect all sorts of other parameters.

Chipping can only really adjust the fueling and I am not sure that this is a good thing. I know on one of the local toyota's they include stuff like limiting torque in first gear to avoid smashing bits and pieces. Do you think an aftermarket ecu is going to include all that stuff?

I am of the firm opinion that if your wagon is not powerful enough then look for a more powerful wagon. I have heard very good things about the TD6.

Stephen, Thanks for your input. Funily enough, the chap that I spoke to that sells plug in power box upgrades said that I would need another intercooler. The chap that was doing the ECU remap, who incidently leaves boost, max speed and rev limiters alone, adjusts torque limiters atc etc said that the existing intercooler was good enough.

I am more inclined to believe the ECU remap guy as he was actually doing the do and talking the talk as opposed to just plugging in a box... But the JE are highly resepcted, do the ECU remap and also drop in an intercooler?!?!?!?!?

The shear power thing isnt really all that important to me, nor is increasing top speed. Its the bigger torque curve im more interested in...

TD6 is all well and good, for those with more money than I.
