TDi Clutch pipe & Damper

We were sitting yesterday evening pondering on why there is a damper in the clutch pipe on 200 & 300TDi engined manual transmission vehicles; and whether the complete pipe assembly could be simply replaced with a single braided hose?

from Haynes BOL: The damper absorbs the small fluctuations in hydraulic pressure caused by slight variations in engine speed at low rpm.

Now given that this isn't a servo system, why should engine speed affect the pressure?
