The RR will fail its MOT test on 17/11 so I thought I'd look at a Disco -> thoughts, please

The semi-trusty RR will, after 22 years on the road, fail it MOT test on 17 November because of 'BER' rust and other problems according to the chap who spanners it.

Thoughts have turned to replacing it with a Discovery and, a not too energetic search, has found this:

Whilst I'm unlikely to buy the first one I drive/sit in, I would appreciate some words of wisdom and guidance for when looking at Discos in general and opinions on this one in particular.

TIA

I don't know how much of a different beast a 2003 is compared to my 1998 D2, but rust rust rust is what to look for, cills / body mounts, top of rear wheel arch (bottom of pillar), rear floor, rear body to chassis mounts. That's all that was wrong with mine, oh apart from rear abs sensors needing replacment, rear brake discs, calipers, pipes...., power steering pump, water pump, think that's it :-)

10k seems quite high for something that's done 120k milage? Andrew

Thanks. Sounds as though your Disco is (was) suffering from most of the 'features' afflicting my RR :-)

Yes, it is expensive. Can't see why. There is another dealer here:

with three Discos for about thesame money but showing around 50K on the clock. This

to be the most attractive. Will test the expensive one on the basis that it's good to test drive something that you have no intention of buying!

all that work was 2 years ago, MOT due next month, will see what happens, need to do the annual fiddle with the front abs sensors to clear the faults. Good luck!

The RR has been limping along for the last 4 or 5 years - everything has been downhill since the head gasket blew and burst the heater matrix. Cost of head gasket repair was more than the vehicle was worth even then but I did replace the heater matrix. Since then it has needed a little bit of sill and footwell welding, a rear wheel bearing and both rear discs replacing and the rear calipers overhauling. In August the front near side caliper seized big time and I asked my spannerer to look the vehicle over with a view to its impending MOT test. Both sills are rotten and all manner of other rust is devouring it. So it has to go - something I have been putting off for far too long.

All these prices seem high. They're at about the same level (some even higher) that I paid 5 years ago for a 2002 D2 auto with 69000 on the clock from a main dealer. At the time that wasn't a ridiculously high price.

What do you fiddle? I have the "three amigos" showing intermittently on my 2003 D2

Your hub is knackered.

Yes, probably. There's a definite graunching noise from the LH hub area when turning. I'll start looking at replacement part prices :)

Mines a '98 d1, so I just have to reseat the front right abs sensor, but as soon as I reverse or make a sharp turn the light comes back on. As Nige said, on yours I think the abs sensor is built into the hub and can't be replaced on its own. Andrew

OK, see separate thread

The D2 sensor can be changed on it's own, it is a modded part & harness, but it wont be that, the hub is worn.

No, it bloody wasn't! Turned out to be the Shuttle Valve.
