Top Gear is one of the shows that I try not to miss. Actually the only one I managed to lose on this latest series was the one with the new Discovery which was shown yesterday so I consider myself pretty lucky. Last week's show was also a re-run of a previous episode.

I think they also quote when the next series will start. But then again I think that BBC World shows them a few weeks later than the UK broadcasted TV channel.

Glad to hear you liked Greece. Syros is much better than Athens of course. How about visiting Greece during winter also? We have some excellent ski resorts and spectacular rivers if you are into white water rafting and kayak, not to mention some of the best places to go off roading with our Landies.

I can also receive BBC1 and BBC2 here. Maybe that is an option. Maybe someone can tell which one to check. Maybe it is some commercial BBC broadcaster which I can't receive over here.

I liked Athens as well as Syros. It is hard to compare the two.

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to get to go to the studios for some Top Gear filming.

They've had to re-make all the links from the last series (i.e. the bits in the studio between the films) so they can show them in the USA. It'll be "Top Gear USA" and I believe it's due out on the Discovery Channel in April.

You might be able to get that although there's also a Discovery Channel Europe apparently, so you might have to search a bit.

The shows will quote prices in dollars, and mention "trunks" and "hoods". They initially told the US'ers to bugger off and not be so silly, but a large cheque was waved.. What you don't get to see is the wonderful out-takes where Clarkson lays into the Americans for.. well, everything! ;)

....... which just goes to show how utterly pointless the show is! They either tell it as they see it or shut up, and from what you describe above I'm even more convinced that it should be the latter.

Why? If all they are doing is translating it into another language and currency what is the problem?

Of course, the tests will be irrelevant to US roads and US motoring issues. That's up to the US audience to decide though, and doesn't detract from the value of a UK opinion.

I was meaning the "if there's anough money in it we'll do/say anything" bit. Call me a cynic, but any sort of product related journalism in any field these days is very much geared towards the writers chance of getting in on the next review (i.e.play with new toys) rather than giving an objective assesment - oh, and looking cool is rather more important than facts most of the time. There are many examples of journalists giving their real opinion in "off camera" moments, but as far as Top Gear goes I watched a bit about driving a diesel Jag round a German (possibly Austrian) circuit which just about sums it up. A female driver, seemingly well respected by other drivers there, stated that Clarkson "could not drive - he thinks he can but he can't". Clarkson then proceeded to send a 15 minute or so slot proving her right! The only bloke on the show who talked sense was the short guy (bike specialist I seem to remember) who was quite happy to point out that Lada's may well have has their weak points, but they also had their good points for those of us who live in the real world. That was proper journalism, sneering at people because they don't want the latest flashy toy with all the gizmos isn't. Unfortuately, as demonstrated by 5th Gear, being objective isn't good telly..... All my own opinion, of course.

hey, now be fair. Your talking about the old nurburgring, which, to do any good at, takes most of a lifetime to learn - the woman who was instructing Clarkson and who subsequently trounced his lap time lives nearby and has been driving it for years.

it's about 14 miles, and has some ridiculous number of corners.

I give you good odds that most of the F1 drivers would be equally crap initially.

I'd love to see Ecclestone use some of his multi-billions to upgrade it to F1 standard (probably need more than one medical centre, and suchlike, due to the size...) and have F1 races there again. That'd sort out who can make cars and who can drive 'em...

I would have to agree with this, having g one round the old track on a motorbike, for 15 laps (Not all in one go) I would have to say it is a track that must be respected. I think it is 73 proper corners, no run off areas, no graval traps, all in all a scary place, where local experience, or certainly lots of laps pays dividends.

This is probably the only time I have fely sympathetic to Jeremy Clarkson
