V8 noise on startup

I have picked up the V8 ES I bought on eBay today. (1996 3.9 LPG). I started the engine from stone cold and there was a "rattle" from the engine. I let it run for three or four minutes and it went away - I'm no mechanic ( I bought it anyway!!!) is this likely to be the followers? and if so what would they cost to replace ? I then drove the car from Northampton to Anglesey only stopping once for LPG, and it drove fine, there is a one year old LPG kit on it, cost the guy £1500 - I got the car for £4300 it's done 109K All electrics work apart from the aircon - possibly a ragas? as the light on the dash comes on ( not important until summer -if we get one!!) and the cruise control does not work - no rush to fix that, but if there is any easy things to look for I'll have a go!!

any pointers on the above very greatly appreciated.

Yes.

Followers, £47. Plus a cam, gaskets and labour. False economy to throw a set at a used camshaft. FWIW, my own 110 tends to sit for weeks at a time and it always gives a little tappet rattle on cold startup, has done for years, since the fully rebuilt 4.0 went in!

Take it you mean re-gas? Yep, that might well do it. Might need a new receiver-drier unit if its not had gas in it for a while, they tend not to work afterwards for some reason.

Check for split and perished vacuum hoses to the cruise control vacuum modulator that's connected via a rod to the throttle linkage. Common fault. have fun, Badger.

has it been standing for a while? If so, it's likely that the hydraulic tappets had drained. the fact that the noise went away is good...

if it does it every time you start it, then you might want to look into it.

sounds good. what was the eBay item number, so we can have a look at it?

Hi Austin, it's this one

It's immaculate apart from the usual bubbles on the back door ( to be taken care of once the engines sorted) the LPG conversion runs great even though it's a single point system (Leonardo) cheap as chips as they say!!

The engine does the "rattle" on start-up from cold every time but goes once the engine has warmed up! knowing my luck it's buggered - but I don't mind spending £1500 - £2K on the engine to get it sorted as it really is in first class condition on the outside and if I would have needed to fit LPG that would have set me back more than a grand anyway. I'll take it to the place I've serviced the 300Tdi and see what they think.

On the cruise control is a vacuum operated actuator on the throttle. Its likely that pipe has split where it pushes on. It happens on ours about twice a year. Also we had a split on the T piece thats behind the washer bottle. Cut an inch off and its fine, (tubing getting short now!! lol). Air con: could try a regas. When we had ours done they didnt put enough in so it was not as cold as it should have been, regassed again and its fine. You may need a new drier, we had to have one on a Carlton a few years ago. It was cheaper to buy it from sercks rather than Vauxhall. Tapping noise: could be cam followers, if it runs fine and goes away every time I wouldnt bother too much - at least for now Richard

If it pulls OK and runs smoothly, I'd leave it, apart from making sure it's serviced regularly with decent oil.

Hi Austin, I think I might just take you're advice - it seems to be running fine apart from the start-up rattle ( but it did not happen today !) and I will start on renewing the suspension as they are all original components.

I am thinking of lifting the car 1" when renewing the shocks & springs, there are a few complete kits out in landy mag world for around £400 are these OK or would it be better to get branded more expensive items, it's only going to be used for some gentle to mild greenlaning - I would hate to bend it !! ( incoming flames!!! :-) )

Cheers - and still grinning :-) :-)

to be honest, what I did to mine was to fit RR diesel HD springs, (the lesser of the 2 types, NRC2119 or somesuch number) and HD 90 rears. The rears required a 1" spacer on the axle as they turn out to be pretty much the same as standard disco rear, for which I couldn't get data.

if you google a bit you can probably find some messages about it. Since then it's been treated to some of David "Llama" 's nice 1" lowered front turrets which should restore normal travel but more to the point passed the MOT.

I suspect it ought to have modified rear damper mounts as well, but it hasn't got 'em. I expect Llama do them, as well.
