|We've certainly found that Rapeseed is almost as different to 'normal' |blended veg oil as normal veg oil is to diesel. | |Other good one, we find, is pure sunflower oil, but that tends to be 80 |ish pence as opposed to 50 ish p for rapeseed ... ;)
Thanks for the info everyone. Rapeseed it is then!
When in Cornwall I get mine from LiDL at 78p litre but Makro Charlton is way cheaper when I'm in London. I mix 50/50 in a 300tdi, had no problems as yet. I always mix by putting 15 litres diesel from the pump then 15 litres rapeseed oil, the down side is that there are more frequent fuel stops to be made, I suppose I could just fill half tank of derv then top up with rapeseed oil, I'm doing it this way because I'm not sure about the homogenising properties, maybe someone knows, I can't be bothered to mix it in a seperate tank.
I notice a pallet full of LiDl rapeseed oil barely lasts one day in store, so for sure, I'm not the only one doing it.
I also have a sneaky feeling that this is why the price of veggie oils has risen 20p/l in the last few months. Look back at the various veggie threads in here over that period and you'll see prices of veggie oil quoted around 40p/l certainly sub 50p/l at the start.
I'm getting "Pura" rapeseed oil from Tesco at 56p/litre, only downside is my local store limits purchases to 10 bottles at a time - I make sure I take the Mrs and we each get 10l, provided they've got enough in - it disappears very quickly.
Probably best checking the catering supply stores, you can get it in
20l drums from there, I've not looked at prices though as I don't do enough miles to bother messing with veg. I did start exploring that route many moons ago when I was doing more miles.
I go to CostCo about once a month. The 20l drums have also gone up. Well over 60p/l last time I looked. With a TD5 I'm loath to try it without knowing if the system can handle it...
I was thinking more along the lines of the specialist catering shops, not cash and carry places, the hope being that the oil-as-fuel crowd (i.e. you ;-) ) won't be going there so they'll be offering cheaper prices. Might work, might be more expensive. ISTR that when I was looking, they were more expensive but if the cash and carries have upped their prices the catering firms might be cheaper.
I have heard elsewhere that damage can occur to the pump seals on the TD5. I'm not saying this is gospel just that I heard it somewhere, it's work checking out before you go ahead.
|In a dim and distant universe |, | Cheshire Steve enlightened us thusly: | |> What do people use Rapeseed oil for anyway - is it for exotic salad |> dressing or something ? I have never had any in my kitchen. | |Frying chips in? Making crop circles in?
From my days in the catering food supplies industry... I think that if it just says 'vegetable oil' on the label, it's fairly safe to assume that it's rapeseed oil. You probably use it a lot more than you think!.
Aha !! - I knew all the stuff from those yellow fields must be going somewhere, I assumed it was being used in food production. So these guys seeking out the stuff marked Rapeseed maybe don't need to be so fussy.
Whilst I do 'seek it out', I'm also not too fussy. I've used rapeseed, Corn, Sunflower, 'generic', blended etc etc. but best we've found is Pura vegetable oil, which, when you read the label, is actually pure rapeseed oil ... and tends to be cheap. ;)
Pura - that's ironic. I am pretty sure that was the trade name that Shell used for its diesel a few years ago, before calling it V-power (same name as the petrol) and confusing old ladies into putting the wrong stuff in their tanks. In fact a quick search shows they still call it Pura in some countries.
