Whats the rusty bit under the plenum chamber?!

RR '88 3.5 efi

I don't mean the whole car either!!!

After following another thread about a 'valley gasget', I've found what seems to be a rusty 'gasket' under the plenum chamber, is this that gasket? Is this the source of my mysterious water leak???? There is a water pipe & hose clip under there that is also rusty. There is no water as such even if i look closely at full temp etc, maybe its evaporating almost instantly?

After reading the valley gasket thread it seems I may incur more problems by changing that!

Thanks for any info.

no, the rusty thing and pipes are the bit that feeds water to the heater and also heats the plenum/manifold.

The valley gasket is the bit between the heads after you lift the plenum and all pipes out of the way, it's retained by 2 metal strips with rubber seals and a bolt in the middle of each, one each end of the valley. The gasket is most likely a metal one, but could be composite. When you undo it, you can see the pushrods, tappets and camshaft, and mostly a lot of black scunge.
