Where is everybody?

Was reading some old posts last night and came across the Lee's one when Snowy packed up, and it got me thinking about the 4th Emergency service, us!

Where in the country is everybody? Ive got no idea where you lot are based, and who i could call on if i needed help....

I was thinking of doing something with google earth, so that it would show on a map where everyone is located - The advantage of this is that you could zoom in, but i dont know how to create the XML files needed....

So - For my own knowledge, and anyone elses! ive uploaded a map to my fotki site -

with my location on it - the password is afl. If anyone wants to add to it, download the jpg, modify it, and email it to marksolesbury+ snipped-for-privacy@fotki.com and it will be automatically uploaded to the album.

If you think its a shit idea, tell me and ill delete it!

Your site is extremely slow to load - not everyone can get broadband. Also you map seems to have the boundaries too small - by about ten thousand miles. Not all regular contributors are in the UK, or even in the northern hemisphere.

Hence the google earth theory....

google do reatively simple group maps i think. I've seen them on other forums. They let you put a pin in for your location.

have just checked and one place is using this:

when you register and set it up it gives you a
formatting link
url which points to your map whichpeople can then add themselves onto.

This is a classic issue that regularly comes up on news groups and forums, the problem is that it can create a thieves map if you don't restrict access, and even if you try how do you vet those wanting to join?. Greg

Greg uttered summat worrerz funny about:

I knew where the AA weren't when I needed them!

I think the idea has merit if peeps are happy to suggest areas they may respond within, like I for instance would be happy to give regualrs here a chuck in the North Staffs area but if someone strange were to ring I'd be inclinded to decline.

I can only think of Tom and Richard who are relatively local, unless of course any one was passing through in which case I'd do what I could , be it a short tow, spanners or a lift somewhere local.

Personally even when we conken-outten I relied on the AA before calling Family but when it was clear they had well and truely fecked up a quick call was made to get Mrs D and the kids home. I then stayed with the Landie and trailer. Dad did ask why I didn't call on him to go fetch the Disco... shift the trailer then tow the 110 home but given I'd paid for over 5 years AA and never made use of them I thought it only fair they did there bit for once.... besides which I'd then have been stuck at 'wom with the 110 the following day, oh and the AA's fuel I found to be far cheaper :-)
