Air Conditioning Question

Hello all,

I have an Is300, 2003 model. I don't normally use the auto A/C setting, but today when I went to use it I noticed something. Perhaps a kind Lexus owner can tell me if this is normal....

When I turn it from off to "auto", there's about a 5 second pause before the air conditioner kicks in and starts blowing air. The air is rather cold right-away.

Is the "delay" normal? If I go from a low setting to the auto setting, there is no delay. In fact, the "auto" setting usually causes the a/c to blow rather hard.

Can someone qualm my worries?

Thanks to all in advance.

When you go from "off" to "auto", the system samples the cabin and ambient air temperature and then decides what to do, i.e, blow cool air, wait for the air to warm up and blow warm air, decide where to blow the air, fan settings, etc. It takes a little time to sample the air.

When you go from a"low" setting, the system is already sampling the air so when you move it to "auto" all it has to do is adjust the dampers, heater control valve, and fan speed.

Close...The feature that the OP noticed is designed to run the compressor for a few seconds to begin circulating refrigerant through the condenser / evaporator. This chills the evaporator down so that the initial outlet air is cool and dry, rather than warm and moist as it would be if the evaporator hadn't been cooled down first.
