The numbers don't look good. November car sales were down 30 percent from last year. While shoppers are used to doom and gloom sales numbers coming out of Detroit, the declines are now industry-wide, with Honda posting a 32 percent decline, Toyota sales dropping 34 percent, and even venerable Porsche reporting a nearly 50 percent drop in sales.

While these numbers obviously spell trouble for automakers, what they mean for car shoppers isn't immediately clear. The credit crisis has continued for months and with belt-tightening becoming the new American pastime, car shoppers are finding themselves adrift in a sea of bad industry news, rising new car incentives, and little advice for consumers.

That's where this year's U.S. News Best Car for the Money awards come in. Car shoppers face an uncertain economy and a shrinking ability to borrow. The key to surviving the current marketplace is to stretch your dollars as far as they'll go -- but that doesn't mean flocking to the biggest incentives. It means focusing on cars that are proven winners and offer a great value over the entire life of the car.

The rankings are based on the collective opinion of the automotive press, which helps to eliminate subjectivity and elevate expert opinion about each car. The winners have something else in common: they are favorites in the automotive press. Not because they tear up drag strips or star in music videos, but because they are extremely livable. Each winner occupies an automotive sweet spot that makes it an attractive choice for the vast majority of car shoppers. Where in that list did you see a Lexus 430? My figures come from my experience with my car. Where do your claims come from - the company sales literature?

Hey moron, there is no model 430. Could you be more of a moron? I don't think so.

The reason the LS is not on the list is because the GS won the Luxury car category. In fact, Lexus won all 3 luxury/upscale categories. No Mercedes. No BMWs. Period.

As I said before, all the data is against you. Lexus consistently beats its competition in terms of reliability, customer satisfaction and cost of ownership by a wide margin.

The fact that your experience deviates from the data, strongly suggests that you're doing something wrong.

As far as I can tell, I am driving the LS430 the same as any other car I have owned. The fact that it has wracked up so many expensive little problems seems to me to be more of a problem of the car than of the driving technique. And I am not asking about the other cars, I am asking about the brakes on this car. Do you drive a Lexus, particularly an LS? Do you have any direct personal experience with Lexus brakes? Have you heard anything usefull about the problems that Lexus has with its brakes? These problems include ones that the dealer assures me are simply normal behavior for Lexus cars such as rough noisy operation in the morning especialy, and often when coming up to a stop sign in traffic at slow speed without having warmed them up by previous stopping.

Yes, I drive a 2004 ES. Prior to that I had a 1997 ES, which I drove for over 70,000 miles. Never did any work on the brakes and they had significant life on them when I sold it.

My parents own an 2006 LS, which I believe is the same year as yours. I've driven a few hundred miles on it. My only observation about the brakes is that they are extremely powerful. I had to use a very light touch or else I would stop too hard.
