04 Meriva towbar electrics

Hi all,

With the demise of the Rover and Mum offering us their Meriva (1.6 'Life') free I don't think I can look that gift horse in the mouth, even though I'm not sure it's the right car for us (saying that, outside the Co Sierra Estate I got from new and kept for 23 years and the kitcar, most of the cars we have owned 'came along' rather than being chosen as such).

So, the first thing it needs is a towbar as I have several trailable things (from a little folding (but rigid) caravan to a little luggage and foldaway motorcycle trailer) and generally fit my own towbars and electrics.

Can anyone confirm if there is any requirement to use a full bypass relay on said Meriva, or even a specific electrics kit for that model or could I use the basic 'direct' wiring of old (and what would the panel advise in any case)? [1]

Would anyone be able to tell me if this model has a socket ready to take a purpose trailer wiring kit please?

I read on one of the towing supply sites that they 'recommend you remove the towball when not in use as it obscures the numberplate'. Could anyone confirm if/ when this would ever come up officially (has anyone been stopped because of that or would it be an issue for an MOT) and if so, what are those removable tow balls like in use please?

Cheers, T i m

[1] Stories of things upsetting computers and the like. How 'old skool' is this 04 Meriva?

Mate has a 3 yr old Pug and was trying to tell me that when a headlight failed, because he didn't sort it within a particular time frame it switched off the other one and even after fitting two new lamps, needed 're enabling' at the Pug dealer??
