06 Volvo D5 V70 issues?

After one as a tow car for a caravan, any known issues to look for?

Cheers

Generally a VERY strong car, with almost zero costly issues.

This will be a Euro4 163 or 185 with DPF then. Be certain what you are buying. Many 2.4d's (i.e. the 163) are sold as D5's (185), check the V5 carefully.

Earlier injector issues (after about 80k miles) were resolved. Symptoms are misfiring from cold start. It should fire up immediately and on all 5 pots with no smoke.

Dash's can go dead or semi dead, but usually can be repaired by BBA for about 160quid, as can the HVAC controller, but this is rare.

If it has Nav, be sure you get a late disc as they are fiendishly expensive from Volvo, and still not very good.

Auto box is strong but MUST have fluid flush and change at 60-70k intervals, less if you are towing. They are 'sealed for life' but will expire at about

100k if not serviced. Ensure it's had the software update which remedies flaring between gears and disables the stationary auto-neutral function. Both reduce lifespan of the box and it's not very pleasant to drive.

Manual box - DMF flywheel is generally strong as is the clutch which will do

120k with ease if not abused.

Intercoolers, especially manual 185's should be considered as a wearing part, it will go out of shape and eventually burst. You can replace with OEM lasting a similar milage again , or go for an all alloy IPD (from the usa) unit for only afew quid more.

Front engine mount is pressurised by turbo boost pressure and the small dia plastic tubes can break off. Easily remedied but gives strange symptoms.

EGR mixer on the inlet will eventually coke up but the later cars are better than eariler. Personnally a stage 1 remap with EGR delete which yields 400nm and 200bhp turns what is already a brisk car into a fast one. Not that the

163 can be tuned to exactly the same level as the 185, and are often bought cheaper. Expect 45mpg in mixed use for both manual and auto.

About the only car that has almost zero issues with the DPF.

S60R rear anti roll bar can be added + Sachs dampers all around again from IPD and transforms the handling like you would not believe.

Very underated car and capable of huge mileage so beware its not been clocked. Go for as higher spec as possible and FSH. Avoid povety S models.

Hope this helps!
