106 Drum brake inspection

I had the wheel off the rear of my new (old) 106 in an effort to inspect the rear brake.

Having not owned a car with drum brakes before, I was unsure about the process. Once the wheel is off you cannot inspect the shoes without undoing the hub nut, or so it appeared. Trouble is, it has a sort of rung that deforms to stop the nut working loose, so will need replacing after undoing the nut.

The haynes book doesn't mention inspecting the friction material, so is it possible? I must be missing something!

I appeal to the "more experienced" gentlemen who frequent this groups for sage words of advice :o)

I avoid french cars, but most cars have an inspection hole that can be peered through with a torch, these holes are visible from behind the drum and generally have a rubber bung in. Many cars nowadays have an unboltable hub so that the 'axle' and drum/bearing come off in one piece.
