1990 cavalier - MOT and rust opinions ?

Hi all,

been posting a bit lately about this 1990 1.8 cavalier I've acquired - you guys have been great. This must the be the most responsive newsgroup I've ever used !

So, chancing my arm again....

If you follow the wheel arch (rear) down to where it becomes the sill, there is rust which can be poked into a hole, up to about 1 inch in from the edge. From there all the way to the front of the car, the sills are in excellent condition. Oh, and also in the same area but inside the wheel arch, you can make a hole there too.

Any opinions if this is an MOT fail ? It got through last year with the previous owner, and I'm sure it was just about the same at that time...

Thanks, Craig

provided it is not within 300mm of suspension or seat belt mounts it should be ok, but many testers will fail it anyway.

If it's the sill itself most MOT places will fail it as the sill is a structural part of the car.

A 'structural part of the car' isn't always a fail. It has to be within 30cms of a steering, suspension, brake or seatbelt mounting. Or has to be of such a condition that it will affect braking or steering.

On a Cavalier, the rear of the sill IS within 30cms of the rear seatbelt anchors and the rear suspension mountings.

Either way it's about £30 worth of welding & paint.

I don't have to, I have a brother who is an MOT tester.

Also, if the edges of the hole are sharp or there's bits sticking out they'll fail it, stuctural or not.
