1992 Sierra cold start, update

I posted a while back regarding problems cold starting a 1992 Sierra Sapphire 1.8 CVH engine. The advice sort of worked but now I have had chance to strip down the auto choke and found the bi-metallic spring shot to bits.

So can anyone tell me if the spring, housing and associated parts are available from Ford, without the water chamber, and an idea of cost?

Thanks

Dave

Not sure how much the Ford bits would cost - but I'd use this opportunity to convert to manual choke. It'll be worth it.

I agree with Steve. The kit will come with all the parts you need to replace the bimetallic spring setup, and will be much more reliable long term.

Sierra autochokes were always crap. This has brought back awful memories of my old 1.6 with the VV carb!! :o(

A quick google suggests around £40 from

You could also try the Carburettor Exchange in Leighton Buzzard.

You are better at searching the carburettorspecialists web page than I was .

I'll see if any local acessory shops do the conversions, at least I have an idea of price now.

Many thanks, and a merry Christmas to you.

I've been there and done that with the Golf..... shame it turned out to be the fuel pump!

They _should_ be able to get hold of one - especially if you have a good independent specialist in your area. The chains tend not to be so good for stuff like that.

Cheers Dave. And you too.

Either convert to a manual choke, or convert to a manual choked Weber and throw the crappy Pierburg as far as you can over your shoulder. This may not be worth it considering the value of the car (depending on condition) and the ~£300 cost of a new Weber.

Called in today, they will ring back tomorrow with availability and price. At least it will keep me quiet over the holiday period, if it stays dry

Hi Tim,

Your last comment hit the nail on the head, the car's not worth a new carb, it's nearly not even worth the manual conversion

I had to scrap my beloved Cav SRi so this Sierra is stop gap until I can afford something I want to drive, and it sure ain't a Sierra

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
