I want a 19mm socket that is strong enough to undo the wheel nuts on my van without shattering (145ft/lbs). What is it I need to look for to ensure it will be up to the job?

"Graham" gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:
Six point, not 12. Good thick walls. Decent brand name.
Oh, and a long handle...
Just get a 19mm impact drive socket. Should have a matt black finish.
3rd & 4th points will easily suffice for that sort of torque. Teng, Elora, Britool, Gedore or Facom will all cope. Six point isn't any stronger than 12 point but will cope better if you've already rounded the corners.
Any good quality one should be able to handle that torque. Hex types tend to be stronger than bi-hex, though, due to thicker walls.
Halfords pro range are decent sockets.
Of course how you use the socket makes a difference. If you use an extension between the socket and handle and don't support it the sideways thrust can break a socket that the torque alone won't.
1/2 inch drive ?
What he said. 19mm impact socket, 1/2" drive breaker bar. About £15-£20 worth all in.
That is obviously a given. Wouldn't be much good with a 3/8th on the end of my 27in torque wrench. Thanks for all the other advise. Searching for "impact" has led me to the deep sockets I need.
