2.0 HDi timing belt interval

Trying to get a straight answer to this one has proved difficult.

How often does the timing belt on a 2.0 HDi (PSA) engine need to be changed?

Any ideas on cost - non peugeot garage?

What else should be done? - I understand a pulley also needs to be changed.

Basically, looking at a 2003 pug combi partner mini MPV thing with this engine in with 68k miles on. Should I factor in an impending cambelt change into negotiations if its not been done? and if so how much?

Anything else to look out for on these at this mileage? Seems a bit high but are diesels OK at this mileage at the right price? Of course I'm guessing regular servicing is a must.

Thanks for your time,

Jez

( snipped-for-privacy@googlemail.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

I don't recall off-hand, but two seconds googling for "2.0 HDi cambelt interval" comes up with several sites quoting 90k miles.

Depends absolutely on where you are. An hourly rate that's a ripoff in the wilds will be bloody cheap for near London.

Always change the tensioners. Don't care what engine it is. If the water pump's hung off it, do that at the same time too.

FFS! It's a VAN. Most of 'em will do at least that in a YEAR.

The belt kit, includiing the idler, water pump, and tensioner is about

160quid. You *must* replace the crank pulley (torsional dampener) at the same time, which is around 80quid.

It is well documented the rubber section breaks up, and the keyway move relative to the cam sprocket. If you ignore the rattling for long enough the valves will meet the pistons.

Pugueot charge around 450 for the cam belt change as above.

An independant should be charging around 300 to do the job properly.

On my 2003 206 SW HDi 2.0 the interval is 96,000 and the main dealer in rural Worcestershire charges £180.

The Peugeot service manager told me they are not notorious for failing before that mileage, but I've had mine from new and know how it's been driven and maintained.

Mine is going better than ever - the more miles it does the better it gets. It uses no oil between 12000 services and returns about 55mpg. I've used Millers XFD oil since the first service with a shot of Millers Power Plus in the fuel when I remember.

Oh yes that infernal damped crankshaft pulley.

I was on my 3rd one by the time my Pug 206 HDI was due to have its timing belt changed at 90K.

Of course I had the idler and pretensioner replaced as well as the belt. I didn't have the crankshaft pully replaced as that was done about 3 months before the belt change.

According to informed garages, as long as the water pump is not leaking, theres usually no need to change the water pump.

I bought the belt, idler and pretensioner pulley from Eurocar parts for aroud 50 quid, and I paid a garage 100 quid to do the job.
