306 windscreen wipers

Our R reg 306 D Turbo has developed an irritating fault with the wipers.

Whether using flick wipe, intermittent or either of the two speeds, returning the column stalk to "off" causes the wipers to just stop wherever they are on the screen. Very occasionally they will carry on for half a second, but never stop in the parked position. When using the washers, they activate automatically as they should do, but again just stop mid way after a second or so.

I know there is some kind of mechanism to ensure the wipers self park correctly, and I'm guessing it's gone kaputt, but I have no idea where it is (apart from guessing it's somewhere near the motor). The Haynes manual does not mention it.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers Dan

There was a similar problem with the intermittent wipe on Cavaliers, which IIRC was a result of arcing on the wiper switch contacts causing carbon build up. It was a fairly cheap and easy job to replace, don't know how similar Peugeots are though.

Not sure about Frog electrics, but the good ol' Lucas one had the limit switch inside a cover on the motor, and it could get greased up and stop working. A quick clean cured it. If you can remove the motor easily, it will be obvious on stripping it - it has to be a simple mechanical switch operated off a cam.

Cheers for the advice guys. I'll pop the motor out when I get chance and have a look.

Someone else suggested a relay fault, but I can't see that as the wipers and the intermittent function work perfectly. They just don't self park.

I'll keep you updated.

Cheers again. Dan

The self parking has to be operated by some form of cam operated limit switch. Of course, it's possible this in turn feeds a relay, but I can't see why. It's also possible the live feed to this limit switch has failed

- best check with a meter. It should be live all the time the ignition is on.
